The Simma: The Intelligent Apes
Based on the ideas and concepts of Michael Brown
By Myles L. Edmundson
     Overview
In Earth's mid Twentieth Century, author Pierre Boulle wrote a novel entitled “Planet of the Apes”.  This novel told the story of a world inhabited by intelligent apes.  Little did M. Boulle know that such a world really existed.  The Simma are that very race.  They are well known as an industrious and inventive.  They are well known as a technological powerhouse.  They build the best starships, space stations, vehicles, and tech in the galaxy.  People say that Simma tech is surpassed ONLY by Elnore tech.
     Origins
The Simma are one of several races thought to have been planted on their world by what has been universally dubbed “Ancient Aliens”.  One of several races long studied by the Elnore, the Simma are known to actually be Earth apes, genetically altered into an intelligent race, and planted on their home world.  The Simma home world is Simmal, a moon of the gas giant Majora.  Simmal is a world of forests and lagoons.  Simmal is one of fifteen moons orbiting Majora, and of those two other moons have similar environments, both of which were colonized by the Simma when they became space-faring cultures.  Because Simmal orbits a gas giant, it has an abnormal day/night cycle.  Throughout most of Simmal's orbit around Majora, it has a normal day (though Majora is a constant fixture in the Simmal sky), but light reflected by Majora means Simmal's night is little more than a dim twilight (roughly equivalent to Earth at 8PM; bright enough that there is still enough natural light that you could read without problems).  However, Simmal's orbit takes it into Majora's shadow.  This would seem to plunge Simmal into perpetual night, however a peculiarity of Majora's moon system reflects enough light on Simmal that Simmal's day night cycle actually reverses while its in Majora's shadow.  When its facing Majora, its an Earth-like night, but when its facing away from Majora, reflected light from the other moons creates a dim twilight.  This is the Simmal winter, and the Simma see it as a time of misfortune and darkness.  Simmal's most famous feature is Alya, a massive triple ring space station encircling the moon.  Alya is both a space station and a sky hook and is anchored to the surface of Simmal in many places.  Most Simma travel to and from Alya via transit vehicles in the sky hook towers, while VIPs travel using shuttles.  Alya is so massive that it is actually organized into “cities” and governed by mayors and city councils.  Alya is also the center of the Simma ship building industry.  Starship components are manufactured in factories on Alya then shuttled to floating “dry dock” stations.

     Culture
Though the Simma are known to be an artificially altered race, some of their instinctive traditions have become part of their culture.  Consisting of three breeds, each breed has its own individual culture.
     Tangs
The Tangs are the Simma orangutans.  Tangs are aristocratic, social among their own kind, but somewhat aloof to other Simma.  They tend toward immersive scholarly pursuits, such as historians, teachers, college professors, philosophers.  Tangs are more prone to traditionalism and dogma than the other Simma, and are notoriously hard to convince of new ideas.  They tend to live in small family groups, but maintain close ties to their relations.  The Simma practice ancestor worship, as they believe the spirits of their ancestors watch over them from Heaven, which they believe is in the center of Majora, and intervene in their lives if they pray faithfully.  This also explains why they fear the months that Simmal passes into Majora's shadow.  Because they can't see Majora's clouds, they fear that their ancestors can't see them.  This is believed to be a time when demons can arise and make trouble for them.  Simma will place protective talismans around their homes and they will wear protective pendants.  When traveling away from their home world, they will keep a small globe of Majora with them (usually in their personal quarters), believing that the ancestors can see them even from a globe f Majora.  This practice began when they started making globes to allow the ancestors to see them when Simmal is in Majora's shadow.
     Chims
These are the Chimpanzees of the Simma, and the most human of the Simma.  Chims are the most psychologically varied of the Simma, and show the same personality variation as the human race.  Like their more animistic cousins on Earth, the Chims' DNA is 99% identical to humans, with only one chromosome different.  They are also the most potentially violent.  Chims are quick to anger and known to get into violent fights easily.  Interestingly enough, Chims are also known to be quite peaceful.  Chims live in huge family groups that live in a cluster of homes in a small family village gathered around a large and well used community center where the extended family eats their meals, enjoys community entertainment, shares parental duties (including educating their children), and worship services.  Chims make up the majority of the Simma militia.  They are also known to take the most variety of occupations.

     Rills
The Gorillas of the Simma.  Contrary to popular images of gorillas, the Rills are quite like their animal cousins.  They are peaceful, yet quite strong.  They have a powerful temper, but are difficult to provoke to anger.  Rills are the most physically strong of the Simma, and often take industrial or labor intensive jobs.  This isn't because they are relegated to these jobs, it is mainly due to the Rills love of working with their hands.  Rills are also known for their ingenuity.  Simma engineers are most likely to be Rills.  Rill family groups usually center around a mature patriarch surrounded by a harem of females.  Other males in the family are the sons of the patriarch and are encouraged to leave home upon adulthood to establish their own family and harem.
     Biology and Social Structure
Biologically, the Simma are apes.  Their bodies have been genetically altered giving them longer legs and a lower center of gravity, thus allowing them to walk erect like humans.  However, unlike humans, Simma feet are essentially an extra pair of hands, so they don't wear shoes in as much as they wear thick gloves on their feet.  Their feet have the same functionality and dexterity as their hands, and they think nothing of using both their hands and feet to perform tasks.  Simma starships are notoriously difficult for other races to fly as they have vital controls positioned for both their hands and their feet.  Like their animal cousins on Earth, the Simma have retained their extended canine teeth, and thus grinning is seen as a threat in their culture.
Interaction between the three breeds is common, and Simma cities are a melting pot of different Simma breeds.  Racism has long been a problem for the Simma, and race wars once plagued them long ago.  Although they have long since learned to live together in harmony, there is still some minor racial tension among them.  One symptom of continued racism on Simmal is that interracial marriage is unheard of and almost an alien concept to the Simma.
     Closing information
The Simma are the top builders of the galaxy.  They are known to make the best starships, space stations, and other things.  Simma engineers and shipwrights were hired by Earth's Key West Shipyard to work on the GFA's Atlantis Project, the starship development project that built famous USS Atlantis. The Simma are members of the GAP, though their opinion of humans varies, but they generally coexist amiably with humans, and Simmal is an ally of Earth.  Simma can be found throughout the GFA and are quite well respected as officers and soldiers.  They can most often be found serving aboard starships, or working in dock yards and starship repair facilities.  However, Simma can generally be found in a variety of GFA occupations and specialties, though you are likely to find Rills as GFA engineers and ground crews, Tangs as doctors and counselors, and Chims in all sorts of specialties."
