the Shrive: Living Dinosaurs
Based on the ideas and concepts of Michael Brown
By Myles L. Edmundson
Though the Shrive are referred to as a single race, they are actually a conglomeration of different races all referred to as “the Shrive”. Most Shrive races never leave their home planet of Palio. They were once enemies of the Earth, but has long since become Earth's allies, and both planets have significant populations of both races.
The Shrive come from the planet Palio. Palio is a tropical world remarkably similar to Earth in size, climate and environmental diversity, orbiting a remarkably similar yellow star. Palio consists of three continents and three oceans, and is orbited by four moons. The planet features a wide variety of life forms both animal and plant, as well as several ethnic groups of sentient life forms.
The Shrive culture centers around a severely strict caste system. Each of the different Shrive ethnic groups is restricted to a certain area of their society. Shrive who violate caste restrictions are severely punished (often by death). The Shrive government consists of the High Council of Elders, which is composed of representatives from each caste of each ethnic group. Furthermore, each ethnic group has its own Quorum of Elders. Laws are handled by the individual ethnic groups, though there are numerous laws passed by the High Council of Elders.
Though the Shrive are broken up into numerous radically different ethnic groups, they all share a similar biology, to the point where interbreeding is possible between the different ethnic groups, but is a strict social taboo among them. The Shrive are considered to be a race of living dinosaurs because they are physically similar to extinct Earth dinosaurs. In fact, it is a theory on Earth that some heretofore unknown alien race took a selection of Earth dinosaurs, brought them to Palio, and guided them into a sentient race. Though numerous Shrive ethnic groups exist, only two are ever seen by non-Shrive, as most others are xenophobic, keep to themselves, and are actively hostile to visitors. The Shrive language is a complex and difficult for non-shrive to speak as it requires being able to hear sounds beyond the hearing range of most other races, so they have learned to speak the languages of other races. The Shrive have given their different ethnic groups English names which are translations of their ethnic names in their own language.
Essentially living examples of the mythical Collins Dinosauroid, Thinkers are generic humanoid dinosaurs with enlarge craniums, three fingered hands, three toed feet, and hairless bodies covered in green leathery skin. Their enlarged craniums give them superior cognitive functions over other Shrive ethnic groups. They traditionally take jobs that involve thinking and intellectual pursuits. They can often be found as teacher, scientists, tactical planners, engineers, etc., and are generally friendly to non-Shrive, especially humans, whom they have studied for centuries.
Fighters are anthropoid velociraptors. They are very similar to the Thinkers, but have a raptor's wedge shaped head, claws on the tips of their fingers and toes, and a large, sickle-like claw on their big toes. Fighters are extremely aggressive and notoriously violent. They are the most strictly traditional and will take ONLY jobs that involve violence and fighting, such as police, gladiators, and infantry soldiers.
The Foragers are anthropoid versions of the Parasaurolophus. They are notoriously mute because they have retained the complex cranial structure of their extinct earthly counterparts, which feature a complex series of tubes and sounding chambers to give them the ability to speak and hear only in extremely low-frequency infra-sound. Foragers live in vast farming plantations and produce the majority of Palio's food. Though they are strict herbivores, they run ranches and produce meat for their carnivorous and omnivorous brethren. Foragers are notoriously shy and tend to keep to themselves out of fear of anyone outside their ethnic groups. They generally hire Thinkers to handle their business affairs with other Shrive ethnic groups.
These are the main Shrive ethnic groups that are commonly seen by non-Shrive, but there are others that exist, however they are extremely xenophobic and avoid contact with non-Shrive, they hardly leave their native lands on Palio, and NEVER leave the planet itself. Because of strict traditions, visitors to Palio are kept to strictly enforced “visitor area” unless granted a more extensive visitor pass.
Tradition is extremely important to the Shrive. When the Shrive Fighters first encountered humans from Earth, they considered humans a threat, and began to fight a violent war. Though the war was brief, yet quite bitter (and there is still some marginal animosity between humans and Shrive Fighters), the Shrive Thinkers stepped in and negotiated a peace with the additional help of Elnor negotiators. Now Shrive Fighters form the backbone of the GFA marine corps and starfighter corps. However, a group of extremist Fighters who could not tolerate peace with humans banded together and formed the infamous Blood Claw Pirates.
