Description Okay so, I've seen a lot of people calling every horror movie character for a "slasher", despite the horror character
not being a slasher at all. I think the first time I experienced that was when someone told me their favorite
slasher character was Samara Morgan and I just looked at them confused and all "um, whut?"

I don't know how it started, but I think kinda get why people do that because
it is more easier to just call them all slasher, but it's just not correct.
Horror has many subgenres and slasher is just one of them (despite it being extremely popular)
so calling another horror character a slasher, is like ignore the subgenre the character is from.
I'm probably too unecessary passionate about this, but I just don't think you should call every horror character
a slasher XD

That is true, but there are some movies that clearly AREN'T slasher movies, so it's still not right to call them that.

I see why you think that, and I don't think you're wrong, you can argue it's
a supernatural slasher movie. Somtimes movies tend to mix subgenres together,
so they're not always necessary one.

I know of a movie based on the Kuchisake onna that was something of a slasher movie, it also got a prequel.

there are a few different localized titles: Carved: The Slit Mouthed Woman

Ooh I didn't know that one was a slasher,
the more you know.
But I've watched and thinking back I can see some slasher tropes.

It didn't start out as a slasher movie, hence why I've made him say "(not my first movie)".

I'm confused, how is the first Child's Play not a slasher ?

Bakhtak In reply to Daidalust [2020-05-09 19:58:44 +0000 UTC]

It's more a supernatural/psychological horror than a slasher.

can go back even further, there are these movies from the 50's and 60's that feel like "proto-slasher" movies. Where they are sort of a murder mystery except the audience knows who the killer is as we watch them going around killing people and waiting for the characters in the movie to figure which of them is the killer.

a lot of the tropes (good and bad) we associate as "slasher films" were popularized by movies like Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Halloween; but at the same time that's just because a few franchises came out that kept dishing out movies like every year and really over did those elements to the point a ton of horror movies just copied it because its the formula that seemed to be working.

for like a decade then we started to mock it.

That's intersting, I actually didn't know about that, I just know that Italian Giallo horror
also contributed to inspire the modern slasher subgenre.

Yeah it doesn't surprise me the subgenre has become its own worst enemy.
But still enjoyable to watch.

What about Black Christmas (1974) though it came out two months after Texas Chainsaw Massacre, it does have a pretty good slasher vibe

Bakhtak In reply to MariaJose21 [2020-05-09 21:57:24 +0000 UTC]

I guess even with "Black Christmas", "Halloween" is still concidered the movie that introduced the core
slasher tropes we know today.
But yeah it's definitly not the first slasher movie.

MariaJose21 In reply to Bakhtak [2020-05-11 14:14:08 +0000 UTC]

Yep. I do like "Halloween" but I have seen other movies that came out before that should get more recognition
