Description
"The sand comes in undulating whispers, serpentine lines consuming memory and becoming a single sweeping timeless thought. But she too comes with the sand, a lingering persistent memory marking this place in time. And then she departs as silent as she came with only the light to mark her passage; A mirage, a feeling, folded into the cavalcade of sand."*~~~~*
This piece was done on commission for the lovely Digital Artist Magazine who gave me the fantastic opportunity to write an article for the magazine detailing my process. The editor was simply outstanding and really welcoming of my ideas. And by heck I learned a lot myself doing this!
This was an idea that had been bobbling about in my head for a long time, though it's various forms all vague and nebulous until this opportunity presented itself. I truly hope someone walks away from the article learning something or even moreso..feeling inspired to create something!
The idea is inspired, in part, by imagery of a town in the Namib desert called Kolmanskop that is slowly being devoured by the surrounding desert. For me it presents an eerie and unsettling feeling because I am so used to seeing more ancient looking buildings in such scenarios, but the buildings in the town are fairly modern thus leading to the haunting feeling. The second idea is images I have come across to what is, at least from the reading I have found, a new subspecies of cheetah that is thought to live in the Sahara desert (The Saharan cheetah). Images of the elusive cat are sparse and most are blurry grayscale captures by a night camera depicting a thin long legged cat that looks almost like a ghostlike apparition. So in the end the two inspirations joined together to form the above imagery. The cheetah is not quite thin enough to be a Saharan cheetah, and it's spots are too pronounced..but I sprinkled a little bit of personal fantasy into the mix.
I hope you folks enjoy it as much as I enjoyed painting it! There is a sister piece I am hoping to do that will accompany this image C=.
If you want to read the article, it is in issue 33 of Digital Artist Magazine, the May issue in the UK and I believe it is released a month later here in the US. Included with the article are the brushes I used C:. You can find the magazine at: Digital Artist Magazine Website . The magazine also features fantastic articles from other artists you may be familiar with, specifically (for those of you as confused by the mystery that is Corel painter!)
Also ps, the image title is actually inspired by the title of an episode of Cosmos, which may have been inspired by the Dali painting (I couldn't say!)

deservedly so, if I do say so. I've admired your art since TLKFAA, it always makes me happy to see artists from there who have progressed so far.

ASDFGHTHFTF! Omg a tutorial by Balaa in a magazine. Oh wow, I must get it! Unfortunately.... I wont be there in the USA on June . I'm here in the states for whole this month and return to Europe before the 2st June. What a shame!
Well it's an extremely brilliant piece you made, I am very happy to hear that a great animal artist made to popular magazine (not often you can find great animal art). Congratulations and yet I'll figure out something to get this in my hands!

Yoooou always make me feel so squishy good with your comments. I think you can order issues online though! But how much more exciting than my silly article that you get to travel this whole time! Enjoy your time..I hope it is magnificent and full of adventures!
I am also surprised when I was asked to illustrate an animal for a magazine..but the editor is simply brilliant and is obviously an animal lover. Vantid is in just about every issue and all her pieces center on wildlife of one form or another..and even anthros sometimes. How great is that?!!

Yeah, that's true, however, ordering stuff from the official websites are huge pain in ass x__x I had too many issues to order some clothes from their official website because they were so picky that 1) nope your paypal is in Polish, so sorry we cant make order, 2) no, your shipping address doesn't agree with *include some reason* address.... if I buy online, I always buy via Amazon, eBay etc. then maybe hopefully they will put that issue!
Honestly, I don't read Digital Artist magazine since I'm stick with ImagineFX magazine. It's absolutely brillant magazine. But I do sneak and read (in bookstores) Digital Artist and I don't remember seeing amazing Vantid's articles there, maybe .... I got quite unlucky timing
.... or perhaps I need to get glasses haha.
But that's great to hear that brilliant artist Vantid is there all the time! Buuuut now you guys NEEED to make to ImagineFX! I swear I never seen a GOOD ANIMAL artist in that magazine besides legendary Terryl Whitlatch.
Yeah, I'm very wanting to choose my pathway in the life to become a traveler (as well that includes being a photographer and writer) than artist so that's why lately I'm neglecting my art. Unfortunately to be a traveler is very, very difficult pathway but for now I do with my pure passion and a grand journey for myself to learn about the world and also inner-self journey. One of my favourite pieces of yours are werewolves in Himalaya... I have such big fascination with Tibetian Himalayans (especially that sacred mountain known Annapurna) regions and planning do travels. (Greenland is still on the top of my list of travels and I'm greatly fascinated in that such mysterious land, it's legends and myths, culture and tribes of Anpuq Inuits).
And that's another reason why I love your art because when you paint full background paintings they have strong feeling (and very realistic) of faraway places of travels...
Also I noticed you paint a lot of oriental desert-themed background/environments Is there some connection between you and lands of the East Sun? :]

Ahhh Im sorry to hear your experiences with their site have been difficult. Have you considered dropping them an email and voicing your troubles? Maybe they will be happy to help ^_^. I love imagine FX as well and buy issues that really catch my eye or offer tutorials or features I simply must own. I'd love so very much to get into Imagine FX but I suspect it won't happen. I am surprised enough to be asked to illustrate animal art for any art magazine! My work and the likes of Vantid's work are just not considered mainstream. I understand why but I do hope the dynamic shifts. Regardless I should just create what my heart tells me to and worry about the world a distant second.. After all..if I create what would be mainstream, it would not be my passion and I wouldn't love creating it. So maybe it would gain me attention...but at what cost? I love what I do and I want to keep it that way! I do enough mainstream art for my day job XD!
And I am so glad you are wandering! I had the very unique and privileged opportunity to visit Asia and Australia this past year (Taiwan, Japan and briefly Korea ;} for the Asian aspect ). And I feel very enriched by the experience which has opened my eyes to how different the world can be from where I have lived most of my life, the USA. I wish I could say I have a direct link to the lands of the East Sun...but alas it is all in fantasy. I admit most of it is probably naive exotifying of a foreign place but I am truly drawn to Tibet in particular for the sense of the ancient that has survived, albeit bruised and scarred, into the modern world. I'm certainly not alone and in part I am not sorry that I romanticize this world..and I would love nothing more to enhance the romance with the reality of experiencing it in all it's varying shades of light and shadow. I hope you have a chance to visit...I plan to absolutely do so the next time I have a chance to escape to Asia!
I hope you share your adventures with all of us! I would love to follow along with pictures and stories <:.

I'm not crazy about how the side wall, (coming at the viewer), came out. It looks far too light or the perspective is off or... something. But the sand and the back rooms/wooden doors and the cheetah are beautiful.

This is STUNNING work, Balaa! Very, very beautiful! It's realistic and fanciful at the same time. What an amazing, yet convincing combination.
The gentle glow effect around the cheetah is a very nice touch, and I love how he offsets the colors of the interior of the room on the right side of the canvas. Excellent work all around!
And congrats on getting featured in that magazine! That must be an awesome feeling for you!
Keep up the fantastic work!
