Description (So first off, props and credit to   for taking my shitty drawing and making this gorgeous thing out of it. Seriously, he's awesome and deserves all the cookies and bundt cake.)

During the Long Dark, several engineers speculated on the nature of the hyperspace currents that held the Fleet trapped, wondering if they could be harnessed as more than just energy for their ships. Wondering if the currents could be directed and controlled to propel new ships at undreamt of speeds through the stars. The Magellan class is the fulfillment of those dreams.

When they arrived in Ancerious, the shipwrights of the Houses immediately began trying to think up ways to reach the halo stars in a timely fashion. They managed to develop a new type of FTL drive unit that folds hyperspace and it’s currents through the core of the ship, focusing the streams of energy and using them as thrust. As a somewhat inconvenient side effect, this also produces absurd levels of radiation, such that even Imperial nanotech can barely cope, nevermind trying to keep organics alive.

The Magellan class is more than capable of reaching the Halo Stars at speed, but even with its advanced systems, ETA estimates all range on the far side of fifty years or more. While such is seen as no less of an insurmountable journey by shorter-lived powers, the Houses view this as a more than acceptable timescale and have outfitted the vessels with wormhole construction technology accordingly.

Truthfully, the largest barrier to the construction and deployment of ships to the Halo is funding and politics. Some factions within the Senate fear that mounting an expedition would be seen as a challenge by other nations, while different groups protest the expense at a time when the Imperium should be turning its attention towards infrastructure and building up the fleet. Perhaps in time, the Houses may once again look towards reaching beyond the galactic disk, but such dreams remain out of reach and practicality for now.

That's one strange-looking ship... It looks almost organic.

It does sound quite effective at its function, though.
