Charley-the-Dragon In reply to ??? [2014-04-24 13:58:42 +0000 UTC]

Interesting piece with lovely choice of colors. I love the animal head (is that a horse) in the background. Nice design of the armour and it's just shame it doesn't continue on the lower half of body, but it was brought up multiple times already as I see. What bugs me more, however, are some anatomy issues, like back bend in 90Β° degrees angle - while possible, it's VERY uncomfortable and painful position, impossible to do in plate armour, and her breasts are positionedΒ  way too low for a human being.

An exposed ass is so very useful when going into battle... e_e
Don't even get me started on armour with tit-shapes moulded onto them, there's a whole number of reasons why they're completely impractical, and downright dangerous too. Female armour shouldn't differ in anyway from men's. Armour is unisex; stop sexualising it.

That's why I love game of thrones, as overhyped as it is. The armour on Brienne is just perfection. I'm a huge history and armour nerd, so when I see booby-plates, my inner rage monster comes out... xD

I'm fairly certain that the goal here was not to design practical armor.Β bamuth.deviantart.com/art/Knig…

cavaleiroviking In reply to ZFrair [2014-04-24 16:32:30 +0000 UTC]

Yet people have the right to criticize, no? They're not offending or anything, just expressing an opinion. Art as well as anything on mass media affect the form people see something, for people that like all the medieval, fantastic or knighthood theme, these unpratical armors, such as the ones every game seen to put on their female characters, become a bit "ugly" in the lack of a better word, for people who would like to see a more "real" female knight. But everyone have also the right to like it, love it, buy it.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ZFrair In reply to cavaleiroviking [2014-04-24 18:41:32 +0000 UTC]

Of course, no where did I say he/she didn't have the right to criticize. But just because someone should certainly be allowed to express their opinion, doesn't mean their opinion should now be protected from all criticism, that would sorta counter the whole "everyone is entitled to their opinion" idea.

The breast molds on female armor actually aren't dangerous, that's a myth that was debunked.Β  Most of them were decorative and placed separately over an armor breastplate.Β  The rest were not designed in any way that would be dangerous.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

OuijaBoardum In reply to krokoflaf [2014-04-24 16:44:40 +0000 UTC]

I've heard different;Β www.tor.com/blogs/2013/05/boob…

My favourite quote being; Let’s say you even fall onto your boob-conscious armor. The divet separating each breast will dig into your chest, doing you injury. It might even break your breastbone. With a strong enough blow to the chest, it could fracture your sternum entirely, destroying your heart and lungs, instantly killing you. It is literally a death trapβ€”you are wearing armor that acts as a perpetual spear directed at some of your most vulnerable body parts. It’s just not smart.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

krokoflaf In reply to OuijaBoardum [2014-04-24 20:22:48 +0000 UTC]

Yes, this is the debunked one that was proven wrong.Β  More specifically, the sculpted breast armor didn't have the divot in between them, historically.Β  Only in the picture used in this article, which proves that they found a picture of armor for their point, and nothing else.

It's called confirmation bias, when someone looks up evidence only to serve their point, instead of considering any alternatives.Β  It's pretty popular these days, especially on the tumblrs and that kind of stuff.

cavaleiroviking In reply to krokoflaf [2014-04-24 21:02:14 +0000 UTC]

Do you have any pic of an armor with breast molds that won't hurt the user and/or not allow a sword to slide to the center of the warrior chest?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

cavaleiroviking In reply to OuijaBoardum [2014-04-24 19:40:11 +0000 UTC]

This also states another important fact: Armors would never be so tight to the body. If a female knight was wearing just the upper half of the armor, I don't know, to look sexy for someone? she would look very weird, with the upper half of her body looking so bigger than the lower.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

OuijaBoardum In reply to cavaleiroviking [2014-04-24 19:58:54 +0000 UTC]

*nods* Armour usually has a lot of padding beneath it too, so even women with large chests could fit comfortably in flat-chested armour. We don't NEED room; large busted ladies can comfortably bind their breasts too, so I don't know why men make the argument that women NEED boobie plates to be comfortable... xD
Armour is heavy and quite uncomfortable for everyone wearing it; the only important thing is that it's made safely :3 (without butt cheeks exposed XDD)

cavaleiroviking In reply to OuijaBoardum [2014-04-24 20:45:24 +0000 UTC]

Not only men, some women love this super-sexualized designs, so much that they ignore movies/games that don't have it. And it doesn't stand only for fantasy, or medieval fantasy, but also comic books (super heroes), manga/anime and sci-fi.

It is very simple to make a female knight to look sexy: draw her without the armour, knights used to wear armor only when going to battle, so I think it is possible to develop a story with a sexy character without appealing. Although I understand the artist have its rights to draw whatever he/she wishes, I just get very sad to search for good fantasy art in internet and see only things that make fantasy look like a scapegoat to see erotic-art and erotism (that, in my personal opinion, aren't really sexy once being too much exagerated). Red Sonja could stand all naked and she would be much more realistic than wearing a scale/chainmail bikini, for instance.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

cavaleiroviking In reply to krokoflaf [2014-04-24 16:26:57 +0000 UTC]

That's not a myth, plate armor had the function to make the enemies swords slide off from the body, thus damaging less the armor - understand that the armor wasn't really undestructible, since it needed to be light enough for one to wear it during days (months, even years sometimes) - the breast molds make the sword slide to the center of the chest. Of course in a very fast battle it would make a lot of difference, but in a war, after some battles against a lot of enemies, a female warrior would eventually get a hole in the middle of the breast molds.

Drawing is nice but I wish artists would move away from the nonsensical female armor design and the overall objectifying of the feminine gender.

cavaleiroviking In reply to shadowcatkill69 [2014-04-24 16:21:43 +0000 UTC]

Agreed. If the intention was showing her body, then the upper parts of the armor are unnecessary. It's like she's going to battle like that, and that's how female warriors are shown in every fantasy game nowadays. Sad.

But of course, it have a lot of technique in the pic.

It's not objectification to show the beauty of the female body. This work of art is in my opinion is in the same league as all of the great art works in modern museums. Β She is not sluty in anyway, it's what my wife would call a classy pin up. But hey, your comment is your opinion, can't force you to change it.Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Crimm-Art In reply to Lokix2501 [2014-04-24 23:59:11 +0000 UTC]

There is nothing inherently wrong with pin-ups and the like. Hell, I scream from the rooftops every time I see shit like this, meanwhile on my bookcase there's a big artbook full of pinups. HOWEVER! This does not excuse the overabundance of this kind of mindset displayed in the painting.Β

I'm not saying people can't draw and paint what they like (even if that is a knight inexplicably wearing garters). But it doesn't mean everyone has to shut up and stop pointing out the disturbing amount of art that portrays female figures who should be empowered based on their apparent occupation (ie., being a knight) but are subsequently disempowered and turned into the equivalent of a Sexy Lamp (ie., wearing ultimately useless armor for the sake of satisfying the viewer/artist). It's a problem with the overall field, not with specific artists; but those artists are a source for changing the field if they'd make the effort.

If there were a TRUE balance between the pin-up style stuff, and more realistic and empowering images, it wouldn't be such an argument. But it's way out of balance, so argue we will.

HA, the old "I have a life" card. Typing your opinion on a public forum was fine when you did it, but when someone gave you an informed rebuttal, suddenly that form of communication became a waste of time. You may as well say "I got nothin'".
