Description For critique purposes: I'd mostly like feedback on composition and unity and color, but if there's anything else I'm all ears!

------------------------------------
Pencil Club Daily Deviation, 2008.Jan.23 -- thank you!

Spoilers from George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire below. If you haven't read the books A) be wary and B) READ THEM!! You won't regret it, great plot, great setting, great characters, really has some fun riffs on the fantasy genre. Okay, spoilers, consider yourself warned. Really, don't read any further if you don't know the story! (Actually it occurs to me that the title was probably a spoiler, so I took it out ... but it's still in the picture so ... you're probably still spoilered ... hrmm, I don't think I thought this through very well.)

.
.
.

This is Catelyn Stark after her husband's death, I wanted to imply her remembering different things from their life: welcoming a baby, an executioner's axe, their goodbye in the brothel, crows circling skulls mounted on a castle balcony (though that's technically not a memory, I guess), Winterfell from a distance (I think I wanted it to be her arrival there), and the hired knife sent to kill Bran. I wanted to bring out her longing for their life together alongside the series of events that led to his death.

My first color pencil portrait ever, could be better but could be worse!

Progress .

Character © George R.R. Martin, please don't sue me I'm very very poor!

I'm really glad that you said that because I was thinking that the dress and the lower left figure need the most work. I didn't intend it at all to be ambiguous, I just got tired! So definitely I will work on defining those two areas better when I return to this. It definitely helps, I really appreciate your thoroughness!

PS I saw the line in your sig and joined ~GoldenCritique-Club , so double thanks! And you should read the books, there are a lot of different kinds of characters, something for everyone!

You're very welcome! And thanks for joining the club! It's new so there's not much activity, but hopefully it will pick up soon.

Hmmmm... this is pretty beautiful, and she's a redhead. You put in some awesome colors, and there is some damn good softness going on. You did some excellent work here.

Stunningly beautiful. Love the softness of the shading against the crisp outline.

Thanks so much, I was looking at some art nouveau pictures when I got the idea but I'm afraid the lines aren't as pretty! The colors were fun though, I enjoyed building them.

That's really fantastic for your first time doing a color pencil portrait. Thee background is what really makes it though.

The backgroud makes it because you can see her thinking about him, so it adds more emotional depth.

This is a fantastic piece, you've got a really great eye. And I love the symbolism; symbolism is fun!
One suggestion: I think the figure in the lower left (the assassin sent to kill Bran, I think you said in your journal) is problematic mainly because he is too light, and therefore distracts the eye from the lovely Catelyn. I think if he were darker (and you could hide his face in shadow, since you mentioned you were having trouble with that) it might work better.

bananorama In reply to leahcaitilin [2008-01-06 02:55:07 +0000 UTC]

I think you're right, I wanted it to be bright to make sure there was enough weight on that side of the picture but I don't think I thought that through too well, it seems to make it too imbalanced. I worked that part of the paper so hard (though it doesn't show in the scan) and that's partly why I don't want to work on the face, so covering it up is a great idea. Thanks so much for your thoughtful comment. And I agree, symbolism is great! I am trying to come up with similar things for the other Stark females in the story, I've got a start on Sansa and Lyanna will be easy enough but Arya is giving me problems, beyond Needle and a wolf.

leahcaitilin In reply to bananorama [2008-01-07 02:16:18 +0000 UTC]

Glad to be of service. As for Arya (who is one of my absolute favorites), you could do the coin that Jaquen gave her (guessing on the spelling, as I don't have my books with me right now), a weasel since that was her nickname, the skull with the eye-worm... that's all I can come up with at the moment. I look forward to seeing the rest of your Stark women!

bananorama In reply to leahcaitilin [2008-01-15 04:52:23 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll probably for sure use the coin and the skull (nice and morbid!), not sure about the weasel as I can't draw animals to save my life. Hope I get to them soon, it seems something always comes up though I'm really eager to work on them.

I never seem to find the time either. I started a picture of Sansa last March or something, and have barely started coloring it. Also hopeless when it comes to drawing animals. Or anything other than people, really. I wish you luck!

Very nice work. I thought Eddard was executed with a sword? Maybe I'm wrong. I do remember that Ser Ilyn got Ice for a while afterwards.

Good to see some exceptional traditional work.

You know, I think you're right! He might've been executed with a sword ... and he himself executed Gared with a sword ... so really I guess the axe comes from nowhere, haha! I did try drawing a sword, you'd think it would be easier but for some reason it looked weird, so I stuck with the axe. It'll just have to be an Ooops, I guess!

And YAY for trad art!

I think the axe looks better anyway. It has a better shape for the composition. A sword blade would kind of divide things.

Finished!? Wow! I've been keeping an eye on this one through one of the asoiaf clubs...I'm a big fan of colored pencils, so I can appreciate the (tedious) work of layers and layers of shading to get something just perfect.
For your comments on your journal: I don't notice the outline around the dress at all, but I agree that the neck looks elongated because the base, at her shoulder, is narrower than where it joins her head.
The blue at the top is an excellent touch, balances things out, and Catelyn's hair really steals the show in the best way possible. : )

Thanks so much, I can see sometimes when something's wrong but not always know why, I don't quite have that artist's eye yet. If I ever come back to this (with a hammer and chainsaw, I suspect, heheh) I will remember what you said about the shoulder.

All the layering was so much more fun at the start, hahahah!

Thanks again!
