M A I N

I can feel a kick down in my soul, and it's pulling me back to earth to let me know.

Name: Simon Vilar
Age: 25
Birthday: February 22
Gender: male - he / him
Race: Nephilim - Fiendish of Greed
Height: 5 ft. 11 in.

Class: Student
House: Sirius

Magic: duplication

  • Simon’s magic allows him to create a temporary duplicate of inanimate objects. It works only when the object he wishes to duplicate is in contact with him (in an ideal-case scenario, he is holding / touching the object with his hand).
  • Simon can create only a single duplicate of a single object at a time. If a duplicate of something is already created, he must cancel out the current duplicate in order to create another.
  • A duplicate usually lasts a maximum of 10 minutes on average, at which point it fades. He can push himself to double that time, but suffers from severe fatigue immediately afterwards.
  • A duplicate also tends to be subtly imperfect when put side-by-side with the original, looking similar enough to pass as the real thing at a glance.
    • A duplicate of an apple might be a shade lighter or darker in color.
    • A duplicate of a wallet might end up being a little lighter or heavier than its original weight.

P E R S O N A L I T Y

Curious | Kind-hearted | Thoughtful | Perceptive | Non-confrontational (read: cowardly) | Wary | Petty | Defensive | Impulsive

Simon is inquisitive by nature. He’s often the first to ask questions if anything piques his interest, sometimes asking too much about a topic before he’s cut off and instructed to follow up individually. His exterior belies a heart that failed to harden in spite of his past experiences. Simon picks up on friends’ habits and quirks fast, often happy to adapt to their needs or schedules (it’s not like he’s up to much these days). He isn’t one for open acts of affection, but what little he is willing to perform, he does with much consideration. He particularly likes to appeal to small facts or habits that the receiving party might not even be consciously aware of. It makes for a pleasant surprise, and life isn’t interesting without them!

Simon has an eye for detail, just not the type of details a standard, law-abiding citizen would normally pay attention to. Cameras, exits, and people are all on his to-watch list when he enters a given area. It took him years to hone his sense of spatial awareness, but he pays particular attention to where people are moving and where he is in relation to various things in his surroundings. That being said, if he detects so much as a hint of suspicion directed his way, his usual reaction is a tactical retreat. His complete ineptitude at combat makes for incredibly one-sided beatdowns if he’s ever swept up in a fight, something he tries to avoid as much as possible. Simon himself is more easily intimidated than he’d like to admit and can startle easily. As a defense mechanism, both from this aspect of himself and his years as a petty criminal, Simon is generally wary of people who initiate interactions with him. Ulterior motives weren’t uncommon in his line of work, and if you were dealing with someone like him, you were all but guaranteed to have your pockets cleared if they breached your personal space.

Simon’s confidence (what little he has of it) is easily bruised. He can be easy to provoke, and will snap back without thinking about consequences. A backhanded comment can make the speaker a new target on his to-hustle list. If aggravated enough, Simon will usually act on his desire for petty revenge. He’ll jump to conclusions and act based on that rather than slowing down and asking for clarification. His tendency to do so has landed him in a few sticky situations involving people with less savory occupations. His impulsiveness makes him a fast thinker on his feet, but rather poor at long-term planning (and, on occasion, actually sticking to them). But improvisation can only get him so far, one of the many factors that contributed to his untimely death.

H I S T O R Y

Simon was born to a perfectly normal mother and father, and he was born a perfectly normal human boy. At least, that was the impression he had for the first 10 years of his life. When he figured out that his magic was creating temporary, imperfect duplicates of objects, he admittedly got drunk on his ability and often used it for mischief. This came in the form of stealing various possessions from his bullies, sometimes redistributing his findings among friends. After middle school, high school passed by in a blur. He became a notorious dealer of answer keys—provided that they were physical—and skated through his teen years, one victim to another. He had average grades, but got into a college of his choosing. His parents hadn’t the slightest idea of Simon’s magic or his actions during the school day. They were simply happy of his accomplishments and proud of their son for embarking on the next chapter of his life.

This would change shortly before his graduation. Simon’s father became severely ill, and Simon dropped everything to be there for him. His father went in and out of the hospital, and the bills started to pile up. Even with assistance from relatives, there was only so much they could do to help. Simon’s desperation escalated. The thought of losing someone so close to him made him pick up more and more small jobs to juggle in spite of his mother’s concern. In spite of his ailing condition, Simon’s father worried constantly about taking away years of Simon’s youth. He was supposed to be making friends, having a good time. Every time, Simon would only smile. Every second with his father was worth the world, and Simon would fight tooth and nail to extend that time for as long as he could.

Even if it meant a “special” job.

The pay was good, and he had a chance to hone his duplication magic. Pickpocketing, stealing, deliveries of items he’d never want to be caught with. If Simon put up a good enough act, and was quick enough on his feet if things got bad, his father would live.

When Simon met his quota, he wanted out. But the gang wanted him to stay in. He’d been an incredible asset, and he was just going to walk away? Not if they could help it. Simon was driven away, hopping from one hotel to another. He managed to get help from a private detective who had been wanting to catch the gang for years. Simon made a deal that if he would keep his family safe and ensure that the money would make it to them, he would help him investigate the gang. This tentative trust carried them through a few weeks of anxious information gathering and hiding. Simon was asked by the detective to steal one last crucial piece of evidence to indict the gang and their leader. He swore to himself it would be the last time he’d use his power and steal.

The imperfection in his duplicate was spotted far earlier than he anticipated. A chase ensued. He entrusted the evidence to a friend completely unrelated to the situation  and ran for his life, taking a duplicate with him. He was pursued all the way to a decrepit warehouse, cornered, and incapacitated. The leader reclaimed the evidence, gloating the whole way through… until it faded after its 10-minute limit. Police were quick to surround the building almost immediately afterwards. A gunshot rang out above the cacophony of sirens, and that was Simon’s final memory.

His resurrection into Inferna was confusing, to say the least. The horns and the tail were a surprise, too. Simon didn’t like the idea of being inducted into a war he hadn’t even heard of. He liked the idea of dying again in such a war even less. His superior unfortunately saw some merit in his skills, attempting to train him in espionage and information gathering. When the armistice finally rolled around, Simon practically volunteered to attend Saint Spell. It would get him out of the war, and something in his life would finally look familiar again. And maybe, just maybe, he could finally get some closure on what happened to him.

r a n d o m

  • Simon has a secret talent of being able to sing the high-notes of Take On Me.
  • Stray cats are quite fond of him, but his mother was allergic, so he never had the opportunity to keep one around the house.
  • Simon studied magicians and illusionists growing up, which lent him skills for petty thievery and pickpocketing.
  • Simon has a soft spot for children, and often does magic tricks (sometimes incorporating his own magic) to entertain or cheer them up.
  • The strange indentation on the tip of his tail was not there when he was first resurrected. Simon tells a different story every time about how he got it, but the real reason is terribly stupid.
