The reset is most likely what caused Hero to lose it. Steve had it easier, because he was able to make a new life. He ended up making friends. Hero seems like he had nobody until the Ender prince made a deal with him.
On another subject, we still don't know how the original shadow people came to be that way, though. We know the method, but not why.
