Description
Problem Solved
It sounds funny because the God debate is often portrayed as such a profound and insoluble riddle. But if you actually do Google it, you’ll find plenty of articles about untestable hypotheses, anecdotal evidence, Ockham’s Razor, and other useful info about how to evaluate claims, as well as info about evolution, cosmology, particle physics, and other relevant subjects. (I’ve even written a few myself.) Sure, you’ll also find websites like Answers in Genesis, but if you read everything that’s available, you’ll understand why it’s not called Correct Answers in Genesis.
So if anybody asks you why it’s irrational to believe in God, you can just tell them to Google it. And if they accuse you of naively oversimplifying a complex issue, just direct them here.

There really is no justification for either side, though dare I say it, you have nothing to lose with believing in a higher power. If Heaven or Hell really did exist, if you're an atheist, you can take an idea of where you might be headed. But if neither existed, there'd be nothing to lose by believing.

All you are doing is stating Pascal's Wager. The problem is, which god do you believe in? There are (Im going to be conservative on this) thousands of deities that humans have followed, even the 3 Abrahamic faiths that are broken into thousands of sub-sects. Which do you choose? Or do you go for some vague and ill-defined deity? Choose wrong and you risk Hell (if you believe in it, which no all Christians do.)
Also, one would expect that any deity worth being called that would see through a non-believer trying to get through simply taking the Wager.
At least in my opinion, its better to be honest about what you believe or dont believe in; Pascal's Wager is more about self-serving cowardice than anything else.

I knew that side of the argument, and this is my response:even if there are thousands of Gods to believe in, simply believing in just one single God is better than believing in none at all.

I'm sorry, I should've specified. I meant that if you don't believe in a higher power, if said higher power existed, the consequences might not be very pleasant. Though if you believed in a higher power, regardless of which one it might be, your chances at redemption are still greater than choosing to not believe in a God at all. Though there is another very big flaw with Pascal's Wager: how do you get someone to believe? It is very shaky, you're right.

not necessarily, it highly depends on the person. believing in a god doesn't automatically improve someone's life.
now i agree that if a person does believe in a god yet lives in constant denial of it, then yes, that person is probably better off just admitting they believe.

I understand, though I never said that believing in a god improves someone's life, simply that they might not have anything to lose in the event that a higher being existed. I understand both atheists and theists, though I get a bit tired of how one thinks the other to be more rational, and vice versa. I found a cool little article the other day that dug into the mind of atheists and theists. It gave a bunch of personality traits of the two. Like how atheists tend to be a bit more reserved yet willing to be more open to help others in any given situation, and theists tend to be a bit more sociable yet are more selective of who they associate with.

ah, i see. i guess i took your comment out of context, the whole religion vs. not tends to sound the same and i've heard the "people are better with god" so many times. my bad. i do understand what you are saying though, i personally do not have a religion so to me no matter what you choose, there is nothing at all to lose in the end. only what makes you happy.
huh, that's interesting. well, there is good in everything.

now now, be nice~ this could very well have been on the front page because of its religious conflict. It raises very good discussions and questions about beliefs. Sometimes art isn't just from skill, but from the conversations it can invoke in its wake : )

The only reason it's getting so much attention is from the religious people and the Atheists freaking out about it.

I have no idea..
I don't really have a problem with religious people.
But when certain Christians start getting in your face, and getting on you about not believing in God, that's when it makes me mad.
They've got their beliefs and I've got mine. We don't need to argue about who's right or wrong.

You know they aren't being true Christians, right?
The reason why most people, like you, think that some Christians are like that, is because Christians aren't truly... Christians anymore.
If these 'Christians' would read the bible,
they would 100% believe everything it says, meaning;
they would be nice,
caring,
and put themselves below other people.
in other words, there would be NO reason for ANYONE to have ANYTHING against Christians,
if only it wasn't for 90% of the Christian population being rotten...

I do know that. My brother claims to be Christian, but considering the way he treats my mother and me, I feel like I know more about his religion than he does.
I've seen Christians that're TRUE Christians, and it's people like them that make me not completely despise religion, buecause I know not all of them are completely ill mannered.
I know one boy at my school who constantly talks about his religion. He'll read his bible out loud to "prove" his points, and he'll press his beliefs on my friends and me, and argue with us about our own opinions. That's not being a good Christian. He's horrible, and the Christians like him make me sick. But I know a lot of them are truly great people, and I don't understand why they can't all support their own religion by acting the way a "good" Christian is supposed to act.

Haha, I've always been Christian, but I know its not my place to push my beliefs on other people,
I mean the bible TELLS Christians to be humble with their religion...
I could go on and on.. xP

I know it does, and I've been told that by many Christians. The only thing that bothers me about Christians is when they press their beliefs on others...
The kid I mentioned, he told my friends and me that women should NOT be allowed to wear makeup, cut their hair, or wear jeans/skirts that don't cover their ankles. Then he claims that he's not sexist. If that's the case, then why do men have more rights than women in his eyes?
And don't even get me started on how horrible some Christians are about sexuality..
Whether you're gay, straight, or bi, can't we all just get along? :c

I wouldn't say that. regardless of where we go when we die our lives do have meaning. human beings are creative, fickle and complicated. we created art, literature, music and the spoken word. we've built churches and houses and great archaeological structures. we are sentient beings, we feel, we breathe and we love. we hate, we seethe and we laugh. we are so many things in one. whilst our time may be short in comparison to how old earth is I'd say it's worth it, the fact that we've come this far and are still going just shows how determined and tenacious we are as a species, regardless of how this all ends we put on a great show. look at it this way, if there is nothing after death then you should just enjoy the time you have, this is your life. you only live this life once! we make so many connections with people in our lifetime of bonds both strong and small, they will have known you and will carry on for you. we as a species can love our own, not many others can do that. we may die but the emotions and memories we leave with others are precious and priceless. that's why I believe life's worth living. you never know what will happen and who you'll meet but you damn well know that it's worth the pain and hardships to enjoy the precious moments. the journey is more important than the destination ^^

but your philosophy is contradicting this. you claim if you can improve one persons life then your life has meaning, why does that suddenly change when there's no god? do you not feel the need to help others any more? or do helping others is meaningless if there's no 'reward' at the end? don't get me wrong, I do not wish to argue with you. I am merely pointing out inconsistencies and asking for answers, I do not intend to offend you in any way. ^^
