Description
They held hands as they walked in the dark grass beside the river of sunset hues."You won't be gone long," she assured him.
He sighed. "Hopefully not."
"Trust me, darling." She turned to look him in the eye. "It won't be long until they see how pointless this all is. They'll have you all home before the year's out."
The peppered sky turned the royal purple of a ripe plum. "Eleanor," he said quietly, taking her slender hands in his. "I'm not very sure when I'll be back. Listen, Eleanor, if I don't –"
"You'll come back," she said confidently. "I trust God to bring you back to me. Listen, Harry, I know you leave tomorrow and I was going to give this to you in the morning, but... Well, here, take it." She took a box dressed in brown paper and placed it in his hands. "Something to remember me by when you're out there."
He leaned in and kissed her. "Thanks."
"Open it."
Harry unwrapped an alarm clock, a stormy gray contraption whose numbers glowed green and bright in the darkness of the failing day. Eleanor pointed at the time. "It's set to local time, so you'll always known what everyone's up to around here no matter how far you go."
"It's eight. We should head back to the house."
The crickets serenaded their walk home. "Harry? What do you think Vietnam is like?"
He squinted at the moon. "I've heard it's a whole lot of jungle. Like that article in National Geographic about the Amazon rainforest... I'd imagine it's a lot like that."
