Description
So I have a theory (which is canon in my next gen which i am currently working on).
Here it is:
Princess Luna was forgotten by the citizens of Equestria because Celestia couldn't stand to see the misery in her people's eyes for the loss of her beloved sister. So she ordered Starswirl to cast a spell to erase their memories to end their grief. Her subjects only remembered Nightmare Moon and her banishment of the moon (thus keeping the Summer Sun Celebration). They believed that Nightmare Moon was a greedy and envious alicorn from a far away land that tried to overthrow Celestia.
Burdened with the knowledge that only she knew of her sister, Celestia had a scribe write down the story of her sister several hundred years later in the hopes that her subjects would also remember Princess Luna. However, they didn't. They all thought it was an old pony's tale and treated it as a lesson for their children to behave.
The spell that Starswirl cast on Celestia's kingdom would not be broken until Nightmare Moon returned on the thousandth day of the thousandth year and was defeated with the long forgotten and mythical Elements of Harmony.
