Trad art week: Tools of your trade
Hello and welcome to the first article in projecteducate 's Traditional art: Tools of your trade week! I'm BeckyKidus , and I'm here to tell you about one of the more unusual traditional art tools: namely scratchboard, also known as scraperboard.
What is scratchboard?
Many of you might not have heard about this medium before. So, what exactly is this medium? To quote wikipedia :
is a form of direct engraving where the artist scratches off dark ink to reveal a white or colored layer beneath. Scratchboard refers to both a fine-art medium, and an illustrative technique using sharp knives and tools for engraving into a thin layer of white China clay that is coated with dark, often black India ink. There is also foil paper covered with black ink that, when scratched, exposes the shiny surface beneath.
Very easily explained you have a layer of white China clay or foil paper covered with black ink, and you draw by scratching away the ink to reveal the white surface below. This means you work from dark to light, the opposite of what you usually do when working on white paper. It also means scratchboard is a very unforgiving medium, as you cannot erase mistakes. Apart from this drawing on scratchboard is very similar to drawing with other mediums - hence I have not included any step-by-steps in this article.
Scratchboard creates striking images with high contrast, as - unlike with graphite, for example - areas can only be black (not scratched/engraved) or white (where the ink is removed). This certainly doesn't mean that you cannot get darker or lighter areas. Similar to drawing with fineliners or pen, smaller and thinner strokes will look darker than big, broad strokes which reveal more of the white surface.
Tools
The board
Scratchboard is a small market, and chances are you won't find much of it - if any at all - in your local craft store. Also, bear in mind that some of the "scratchboards" which are sold are of low quality; I recently was gifted some where the ink was flaking off when I tried drawing, which of course made it impossible to draw details.
Ampersand scratchboard is known to be the best, and is the board many professional scratchboard artists swear to. However, they are on the more expensive side - which is normal for high quality, professional art materials.
For hobbyists like myself, I can recommend Melissa & Doug - which is of the foil paper type, and not a literal "board" like Ampersand. However, they are a lot of fun and will serve as a good introduction to this medium.
Scratching tools
Essentially anything with a small, sharp tip can be used for engraving on scratchboard. Scalpels are often used by professional artists, but are by no means necessary. There are also special tools for just this purpose. The tools linked are very cheap and quite good - I have tried them myself (in fact, I have accidentally acquired three sets due to delays in shipping). However, you can also make excellent tools yourself. I do prefer my self-made tool of a sewing needle taped to a crocheting needle every day - which means my three sets of specialized tools are lying on a shelf collecting dust... Ampersand also have their own tools - which are more expensive, but also of high quality.
You might also use different tools working on tinfoil paper than if you use a real board. Using a scalpel or an engraving knife for tinfoil might not be the best idea - neither is using the cheap non-brand tools for board. Look at the tools and the information about them before buying.

The tools also depend on what style you have. I attempt hyperrealism, and I want my lines to be as thin as possible to reach that level of detail. The cheaper, non-brand tools previously linked might be a perfect fit for someone who has a different style, but I did not archive those thin lines. However, it does take some time to get larger white areas with a sewing needle, I can tell you.

Colored inks
A third thing worth mentioning are additional colored inks. I have previously explained that scratchboards can only be black or white, but this actually does not have to be the case - one can apply colored inks on top, and add color this way. There are even special inks which do not show on the black surface for just this purpose. You can also easily scratch through the colored inks as well - ideal for getting the final highlights.
Of course, black inks also exist, and can be very useful for covering up mistakes! However, a fineliner can just do the trick when it comes to smaller details. A fineliner can also be useful for adding additional shading to a piece if you find that areas should have been darker.
As I have never tried these inks myself I cannot get too much into detail on the exact nature of applying or blending those inks - I'll just link some wonderful examples where colored ink was used.
