Being a beginner week
Animal photos. From the most common pet to majestic wildlife, animal photos are beloved all over the internet. And, as an animal lover, they are my favorite subject to take photos of. Ever since I got my first mobile phone (with an extremely crappy camera - to the degree that it seems I have deleted all the photos!) I've taken photos of them, and now I have literally thousands. And I have learned quite some things over the years. This article will take you through some of those things, and hopefully help you to take better photos of the animals you come across.
But first, enjoy some of my older attempts.
The camera
The camera is, of course, necessary when it comes to taking photos. There are a lot of different types, and you can spend a lot of money on equipment. However, this certainly isn't necessary for a beginner. Also, when it comes to taking photos of domesticated animals such as out pets, a good phone camera will often be enough. (Sole exception might be if you still use one of the very old phones with buttons, as I did when I started.) Using your phone camera also has the advantage of being easy to carry - in fact, you probably carry it with you anyway. I have probably taken as many photos with my old Samsung S3 than I've taken with my camera.
The major disadvantage of phone cameras is the limited zoom. Put simply - you need to be close to the animal to get a good photo. It will therefore rarely be good enough when it comes to photographing wildlife, and if you want to take good photos of wildlife you likely will have to invest in a more proper camera. What camera will depend on what exactly you want to take photos of, how much money you can/want to spend, etc. I myself use a so-called "superzoom" camera, which might not be perfect for professional photography but which also is cheaper than most professional equipment. It certainly works great for me!
Most important advice I can give you when it comes to the action of taking photos: Be ready if an opportunity arises, and hold the camera steady! I have had a lot of good photo opportunities the times I didn't have my camera with me or didn't grab it fast enough, and I've also taken a lot of blurry photos!
Getting close to the animals
You will necessarily have to get close to the animal(s) to take a good photo. When it comes to domestic animals this is rarely a problem, as domestic animals usually are comfortable getting close to humans. In fact, chances are you might get too close to take the photos you want - as in this case with a rather curious tame reindeer.
Damn it, I wanted a portrait!
When it comes to wild animals getting close can be a challenge. A lot of wildlife will run away when they see you, especially if they see you approaching. Most animals will also hear and smell you easily, and they will often discover you before you discover them.
There are several strategies to get close to wildlife.

You hide and wait for the animal to appear. This is what most professional animal photographers do. The pros are that you can get very close to the animals without them discovering you, and that way get excellent photos. However, you will need patience, you might get cold and wet, and you will have to pay a bit for photography hides or similar. Another con is that you might get a little too close to the animals - from what I've heard it's not nice when squirrels start to climb over you. Neither when deer start to eat your ghillie suit thinking it's a bush.
(A warmer and less boring variant of this is, of course, to have a house in the countryside and run to the window and take photos if there's wildlife outside.)

You find the animals. This will likely involve a great deal of sneaking, and you will need to know where the animals (likely) are. Often the animals will discover you before you discover them, and then the photo opportunity is quite literally gone. However, this is an extremely exciting way to try to take photos, and with some patience and dedication you will eventually get some good shots.
Windy days are great for sneaking, as the wind in the trees might mask the noise. However, make sure the wind is blowing in the right direction, so the animals don't smell you!
This is personally my favorite strategy - especially during the red deer rut, when you hear exactly where the stags are!
The king of the forest, and a younger prince.

Another of my favorite strategies: The "luck" method. Just take the camera with you when you go hiking, and take photos if anything interesting appears. This works the best in areas where the animals are used to hikers. The pro of this is that it is very easy, and doesn't require any extra patience when it comes to waiting or sneaking. This is, however, the one method with the least chance of an extraordinary shot, as the animals will discover you more easily. Still, if you hike enough you will inevitably stumble over something from time to time.
She is not amoosed.

Another choice is to make a "safari" with the car. In many cases the car won't scare the animals, and you can get good portrait photos this way. Still, you are limited to the roads, and the roads where you see the most wildlife might not be the ones which are best for your car - but you can get some good portraits which it would be very difficult to get otherwise.
Light(ing)
Having enough light is necessary to take good photos. Said very easily, the more light there is, the sharper the photos are. Bad light will easily result in grainy photos and more faded colors. It will be possible to correct some of this with editing, but it's easier to just stick to using good light. A lot of light will also allow you to take "faster" photos (the action of taking the photo is quicker - in good light taking a photo takes ~1/400 second with my camera, in twilight it usually takes 1/32 or 1/16th of a second). This gives you less blurry photos - as we all know, animals move fast, and the "faster" the photo is, the less blur there is.
When it comes to taking photos of wildlife this simply means you will need to take photos during daylight. When it comes to pet photos I would also recommend taking the photos during daytime, but good indoor lights will also do.
To the lighting. Interesting lighting is an advantage in photography, as it is in art. Of course, it is often impossible to plan ahead, especially when it comes to taking photo of wildlife, but there are some tips and tricks.

Sunset and sunrise will give more interesting lighting and shadows, and will have a more gentle and often more yellow/orange look than normal, bright sunlight.

Even "normal" sunlight can still look very interesting, as it adds more contrast to the image.

Having light on the head and face will often make the image look better. The head - and especially the eyes - is the most important area, and it should be the area which gets the most attention.
An example of the last point. Bear with me.
When it comes to taking photos of pets, you can stage the photo and try to get exactly the lighting you want.
Also, a note about backlighting. There will often be a huge contrast between the subject and the background. Often the subject is too dark or the sky too light. Backlighting is great if you want silhouettes, but it is often tricky in other situations.
Composition & background
As with artworks, there are a lot of different compositions, angles, etc. You can have the subject taking a small part of the whole picture, a photo of the entire animal, halfbody, portrait, closeup of the eye... There are a lot of ways to do it, and there are a lot of right ways to do it. A few tips:

The rule of thirds is a good helping tool. Most cameras will an option to show a grid, so you can try to figure out a good composition before taking a photo.

Another thing I do when taking photos of the entire animal + a bit of background is to aim to have the chest in the middle of the image.

Having more space in front of the animal / the direction they is moving / the way they are looking will make the image look more spacious, and give the animal more "room to move".

Having an "important" thing right in the middle of the image (an eye, the nose, etc) might also give a good composition.

Don't cut off paws, ear tips, etc. (Same goes to taking photos of humans - I see a lot of cut-off feet when I look at different group photos!).

In most cases the face / head should be visible. Photos where the animal looks away are rarely as good as the ones where you can see the eye(s). Eyes are important.
The angle you take an image of is also important. I myself am a fan of being at the same height as the animal. For smaller pets like cats or dogs this will often mean sitting/kneeling on the ground to take an image. A lot of pet photos are taken from a bird's eye perspective, which usually doesn't give the most interesting image. The face of the animal should be in focus, not the back. For an example, see the first photo of this journal.
To the background. An interesting surrounding and/or background will improve the image. A deer standing in a field isn't very unusual and it likely won't be a photo you look at twice. A deer crossing a river? Better. Some tips:

Try to get more unusual/beautiful scenery.

Try to get the colors of the background/scenery to fit with the subject.

On the same note, try not to have any very distracting colors or objects in the background. The focus should be on the subject, not on something you didn't want to include.
An example where the surrounding colors fit very well with the subject. In this case, the pine grosbeak.
Pose, expression & uniqueness
Poses do not only tell a lot about the animal, but it also often decides the mood of the photo. A photo of a regal stag will have a different mood than a photo of a fawn, even though the photos are taken at the same place at the same time.
When it comes to taking photos of pets you can often stage the photo to some degree. You can tell a dog to sit, if you (get someone to) throw a stick you can get photos of the dog running. You can also make animals look at specific directions by tempting them with treats, pets, etc. This is much less the case with wild animals, although they will likely look at you if you make some noise. The question then is, of course, how long they will stay...
The expression of an animal will also decide a lot of the mood. A portrait of a happy dog is different from a portrait where the dog has a neutral expression, and very different from a portrait of a snarling dog. Again, this can to some degree be staged when it comes to pets, and less when it comes to wildlife.
A curious young stag and a derpy dog. Quite different moods!
Last, but not least, you can get interesting animal photos without a great background, without great colors, without a great pose or expression - if the image and subject is original and unique enough. You have to be extremely lucky to get these shots, though, but it is possible!
My unique garden unicorn - a female roe deer with one small antler.
Conclusion
And that was it... I hope you have learned something from it, be it about photography or that one-antlered female roe deer exist.
A final bit of advice, though. Becoming a good photographer will take time. If you're anything like me you will end up with sopping wet feet too many times to count (try to stay out of streams. Seriously), you will end up freezing your hands off because you just have to take photos even though it's windy and -5 degrees Celsius, you will curse yourself a lot of times because you have wasted a great opportunity, and you might even be almost run over by a deer which didn't see you. But in the end it will be worth it, I can promise that!
And with that - have a good day/night, all of you, and may you take beautiful photos of the animals you come across!
