Story

Renna woke up frowning. Shouldn’t her alarm have gone off by now? She felt far too rested and awake for it to only be 7am. She reached over and grabbed for her phone, squinting at the brightness. She had to blink a few times before she was able to read the time on the screen.
It was past 7:30. She was going to be late for the hunt!
Renna tossed off the covers and made a mad dash to pull on some pants and a sweater before racing down the hall while she tied her hair up in a quick bun. She came to the commons area and found it pretty much empty. There were still one or two bagels sitting out on the breakfast table, so she grabbed one and shoved it in her mouth, hardly chewing before swallowing as she searched for her boots.
She was wiping away crumbs off her face by the time she reached the stables. It was almost empty here too, but she could feel the remnants of a recent hustle and bustle like steam from a horses breath hanging in the air. Everyone else must be at the starting line by now.
The horses that weren’t participating in this mornings hunt were still snoozing away in their stalls or munching on their morning feed. Renna found Percy much like the others, standing and leaning up against the wall of his stall, still fast asleep. He blinked an eye open when Renna pushed open the door. She was grateful she had the forethought to have her tack laid out and ready to go the night before and had the still dozing Percy tacked up in record time. She wondered if Percy had even truly woken up yet.
It seemed the answer was, no, he had not in fact woken up, as Renna had to practically drag her chestnut horse out of the stables and into the morning air. His hooves clopping echoed painfully loud. Renna was hoping that there was no one to watch her clumsily scramble into the saddle.
Percy snorted and she cued him into a brisk trot, then finally into a canter when she saw the rest of the contestants all lined up and patiently waiting at the starting line. She was just barely going to make it!
She pulled up next to a palomino mare and a black stallion. She could sense them all staring at her, so she pulled on her best carefree smile and said, “I freaking hate alarms.”
The rider next to her looked over as if to say something in return, but there was no time to respond as an announcer's voice crackled over a megaphone. Adrenaline immediately replaced the few seconds of calm she had all morning.
"Contestants, on your mark!" Then a horn blared. Horses heads reared as they all took off from the starting line. Dirt went flying in all directions and the mountains were filled with the sound of thunder from a dozen hooves. Percy wasn't particularly fast, tailing just behind the two Zlesdins, but Renna knew that his stamina and surefootedness would come in when it most counted. They just needed to outpace the rest of them.
The “deers” were somewhere out in the wilderness already, and it was up to the contestants to be the first to find them and hunt them down. Renna let her nervousness burn away in the galloping of Percy’s hooves. She had never competed in anything like this before, but her horse had with a previous rider, and so she let Percy do his thing. He knew where to go, where the ground was safest and which parts of the woods would only lead to dead ends.
One by one, the horses and their riders veered off in search of their prey and soon Renna and Percy were left cantering alone in the ice frosted hills with nothing but trees and sky surrounding them. It was quiet, aside from their footsteps and the wind in her ears and in the pines. She let her horse slow to a trot so she could better take in her bearings. Brenton had suggested finding higher ground so as to get a better view and increase her chances of spotting the target. She scanned the hills and mountains. To the east was a large sloping cliff that looked like it would make the perfect vantage spot, just past a small patch of woods and seemed fairly easy for a horse to scale without too much difficulty. She cued Percy again and made their way towards the cliff. Up close, the hillside looked much more daunting than she had anticipated, scattered with ledges and loose rock, and perhaps a bit steeper too, but--
What was that? A movement caught Renna’s eye. Percy snorted and nearly reared as she squinted up on the hillside.
It was one of the TUA members on their buckskin! They were going along the cliffside!
Renna and Percy wasted no time making chase…
