I used a reference for the pose. In this tutorial wip, I used flatbrush and start with the frame pose. then add minimal details and what character I am creating. from simple details, adding minimal bg, blocking shapes, adding shadows and addtional lights are key components in digital painting. This is one of the process I do if I want to have a more detailed designs.
