Poll: Obama More Popular Than Jesus, Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr.

John Lennon once claimed the Beatles were more popular than Jesus. Now President Obama has evidence that he's more popular than both.

Obama topped a new Harris interactive poll that asked 2,634 Americans who they admire enough to call a hero.

Jesus came in second on a list that includes God, Mahtma Gandhi and George Washington.

Other historic or notable figures making the top 10 were Martin Luther King Jr., Ronald Reagan, George W. Bush, Abraham Lincoln, John McCain, John F. Kennedy, U.S. Airways pilot Chesley Sullenberger and Mother Teresa.

Participants named the heroes randomly instead of being shown or read a list of people to choose from. The poll was conducted online between January 12 and 19, 2009.

At the 16th spot in the poll, George Washington, Bill Clinton and Colin Powell tied.

Other politicians who made the poll's top 25 include Hillary Clinton (12), FDR (13), Condoleezza Rice (12) and Sarah Palin (21).

God ranked 11th, between Mother Teresa and Hillary Clinton.

Of the multiple reasons participants gave to explain their choices of heroes, the ones most cited is, "Doing what's right regardless of personal consequences" with 89 percent, "Not giving up until the goal is accomplished" with 83 percent and "Doing more than what other people expect of them," with 82 percent. Also popular were "Overcoming adversity" and "Staying level-headed in a crisis."

In the first Harris Poll asking this question in 2001, Jesus came in first, followed by the Rev. King, Powell, John F. Kennedy and Mother Teresea.

Obama joked last year at a roast that contrary to rumors, he was not born in a manger but on the planet Krypton. Apparently, Obama is even more popular than Superman, who didn't make the cut.

I think that he's just what this country needed.

He shut down Guantanimo!! and he's going to end a pointless war.

Most likely. I still am a bit hesitant, since he is after all a politician.

He hasn't shut down GITMO yet, he signed an executive order that would close it in a year.

But tell me this. If we shut down Guantanamo Bay, where are we going to put all those terrorists, especially extremely dangerous ones like Khalid Sheik Mohammed?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CapnJon In reply to politician333 [2009-03-16 02:21:55 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I know that...but you understood my general meaning.

GITMO holds a lot of terrorists or whatever the term of endearment you want to use...but it also lost us all of our credibility. Which is why it needs to be closed...you know what I'm saying?

Personally, I'm not sure what will happen to the prisoners, but I'm sure that there is something that they will have to do.

Nice talking to you by the way! Got me thinking again

politician333 In reply to CapnJon [2009-03-16 02:35:27 +0000 UTC]

I do not care about our "credibility" or what the world thinks about us, I care about keeping America safe. Closing down GITMO will make America less safe and more vulnerable to terrorist attacks. You yourself don't know what to do with the terrorists if we shut down the detention center, so why shut it down?

I'll tell you why it is going to be shut down. It is a political move by Obama to solidify his support among the radical Left, who are infatuated with Islamic extremists. Tell me how we are suppose to combat global terrorism by appeasing the very perpetrators in such a grotesque manner as this?

And if the world hates the U.S.A for keeping GITMO open, then so be it.

CapnJon In reply to politician333 [2009-03-16 20:07:28 +0000 UTC]

Sadly we need credibility if we are to have any safety in the world. And just because I don't know doesn't mean that everyone doesn't know. (Though that would be nice...XD) You do realize that this is happening and it'll happen regardless. I believe that our government is competent at it's decision-making is for the best. You do as well, though you feel threatened right now. I can understand and respect that...though I have to say I don't think that it's being closed for a political move. First off, his whole platform was to change politics, and the American people voted for him because he promised bipartisanship. I believe that he is doing what the majority (not Islamic extremists) want him to do.

And the whole "fuck you guys, I'm American" Isn't a good idea...since that's not what being an American is all about...

politician333 In reply to CapnJon [2009-03-16 21:40:05 +0000 UTC]

You still have not answered me on where we are going to put those terrorists. Hey, I know. We can put them on the White House Lawn, that way they can carry out their agenda as easily as possible.

Seriously, if you and "The Chosen One" have your way, when we capture Bin Laden, we are going to give him a recliner and an iced tea.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CapnJon In reply to politician333 [2009-03-16 21:44:10 +0000 UTC]

I cannot answer you there. I don't call the shots, you know? But I do know that's not where we're going to put them. Personally, I don't think that I'm going to worry as to where they are, since I know that our Federal Government is doing all in it's power to keep citizens like me (and you, if I'm not mistaken ) safe.

Yeah, our president is awesome isn't he?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

politician333 In reply to CapnJon [2009-03-16 21:51:11 +0000 UTC]

If by awesome you mean, nationalizing every thing in the country; spending more in the first 50 days than Bush did in 8 years; and eliminating proven counterterrrorism techniques that HAVE kept us safe, then yeah, he is "awesome".

By the way, after you finish being a faithful Obamabot and worshipping his wonders and miracles, can show me how to make blue Kool-Aid? I am sure you have had a lot of it.

Hey, don't dis the leaders! Just because Bush didn't spend enough doesn't mean you can make fun of him!! After all, he's an ex-president! Didn't you learn respect? XD

Sorry, this is fun! Hey, are you insinuating that I drink Kool-Aid? I don't but I'm pretty sure you just pour the instant powder in the water, and then drink it. Repeat as necessary...but I wouldn't know.

politician333 In reply to CapnJon [2009-03-16 22:06:14 +0000 UTC]

What makes you think excessive government spending is good? Well, if your ultimate goal is to add trillions to the debt and bankrupt the country, I guess it is good thing for you.

And if you could not tell who I was making fun of, then there is nothing for me to say.

And by "drinking the Kool-Aid", I am talking about how much you listen to the spin of the Mainstream Media, who adore Obama and do not report any of his broken promises, blatant lies, and downright laughable mistakes. If you listened to more of FOX and less of MSNBC, then you would get what I am saying.

Well, if you get down and think about it...money is just a concept. If we wanted to, we could say we owe no money, and if no one owed any money right now...it all could be better. But we won't do that, since that's what a mad scientist like yours truly would do...

Everyone has something to say, don't be ashamed. I'll forgive you

Actually, I get my news from several different radio stations, to try to eliminate my bias. Fox lost my respect a while ago, but that doesn't mean I don't listen to them. And besides, I know exactly where you are coming from.

XD You are a silly goose, you know that?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

politician333 In reply to CapnJon [2009-03-16 22:21:30 +0000 UTC]

It is not that simple. We cannot just simly give up money and go on a bartering system. The result would be a complete meltdown of our economy.

And talking about radio stations, the only people I liten to are Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, and Mark Levin. They are the only people on the air waves speaking the truth about Obama and the Democrats.

Regarding Fox, they are the only news station that doesn't worship Obama, so they get high marks from me.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CapnJon In reply to politician333 [2009-03-16 22:29:24 +0000 UTC]

Not a meltdown, more like the reset button. Mad scientists always use reset buttons!

Hmm...I listen to no one in particular. I listen to people who tell the truth. And people who want what I want. I take it you are a staunch Republican?

None of the news stations worship him. They give him props, since he is a great man and a good leader though.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

politician333 In reply to CapnJon [2009-03-16 23:31:54 +0000 UTC]

I am a conservative, which as a result of this means I do favor the GOP. But the Republican Party is severly flawed, which is why I call myself a conservative.

And if Obama is so "great", then why did he go back on his pledge to not allow lobbyists in his administration? How come he allowed 9000 earmarks in the recent omnibus spending bill that passed the Senate even though he campaigned on the promise to "go line by line, erasing earmarks". Great leaders keep their promises even if they are unpopular, and they learn how to comprimise on said promises if the need arises for it. But there is no excuse for not keeping this miniscule campaign pledge.

And if a news station gives him "props" and does not report what he is actually DOING, then they are biased and are not doing their jobs as journalists.

By the way, do you know who Obama's vice president is?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CapnJon In reply to politician333 [2009-03-16 23:52:38 +0000 UTC]

I see what you mean. I know that it's flawed too. You have to be insane to say that they aren't insane.

Obama is a great leader, give him a chance and let him do his job. Frankly you are asking the wrong guy. I don't make it my life to get angry at whatever our presidents do that isn't word for word what they say.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

politician333 In reply to CapnJon [2009-03-17 00:11:00 +0000 UTC]

You don't have to ridicule an entire party to get your point across.

Second, I am not getting angry, I am just telling you the promises that Obama has broken, and I am sure he is just getting started. Obama is just two months into his term, and he is no where near a great leader. And I am giving him a chance, but when he tries to make America less safe and turn this country down the road to socialism, I won't stand for it.

And by the way, you still haven't answered my question: Do you know who the Vice President is?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CapnJon In reply to politician333 [2009-03-17 00:14:19 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I do it anyways. A majority of conservatives in the presidential race were a bunch of idiots, and they deserve the misfortune that has befallen them.

:sigh: Give him a chance, and I know peoples shortcomings as well. Personally, I wouldn't mind a socialist state...we could move faster anyways.

And yes I do. Joe Biden. Why do you ask?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

politician333 In reply to CapnJon [2009-03-17 00:34:08 +0000 UTC]

It is nice to know you insult people because of their political leanings. I have to ask, other than Sarah Palin(the usual liberal target), can you name some conservative "idiots" and why they are idiots?

"Would not mind a socialist state"?
It is this kind of talk that makes me worry for the future of this country. Do you think it is okay to take money from hardworking people and give it to lazy bums who do not hold a profession? Do you think it is okay for personal responsibility to evaporate and that the government can regulate prices, control how much wealth you can make, and give handouts to everybody who holds out their hands? How is that suppose to move us "faster"?

There is a reason America has the largest economy in the world. We are so successful because we put the individual first and put an emphasis on the private sector. The government is not the master of the people, the people are the master of the government. Those are foundations on which capitalism is built on. Most Americans do not want to change that.

And lastly; I asked you who the VP is because the majority of the Obamabots know nothing about their Messiah yet they worship him nonetheless. I just wanted to see if you were like the other sheep.

CapnJon In reply to politician333 [2009-03-17 00:41:18 +0000 UTC]

First off whoever said that John McCain should run a negative campaign. It cost him the election, and it's not what he's known for, nor what the people wanted.

Socialist is better than dead. And lazy bums? I've been a lazy bum and I know what it's like to have nothing. I know what it's like to have nothing and feel nothing. When you need a little help and none is forthcoming, what do you do? You become what I am today...a stronger human who just won't die no matter how hard they tried.

And you can see that individual greed and power has corrupted this way of life. We must suffer for the wealthy, which I refuse to do without consequences for them!

And I'm not a bot, I'm a human who has a lot of faith in a president who I know can fix America. I believe in change, and that is what a man just like me has promised.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

politician333 In reply to CapnJon [2009-03-17 01:01:47 +0000 UTC]

I won't disagree with you on John McCain's campaign. It could have been run better.

If we revert to socialism, we will cease to exist as a great nation. There will not be an American Dream, because said dream will be crushed by the government as means of promoting "fairness".

And don't give me the populist notion that this all the fault of the wealthy. While some greedy CEOS are to blame, so are lawmakers from each party. Besides the 1% super wealthy pay 50% of the income taxes in the country.

I have faith in God and in the American people, but I have little in Obama. Considering what he has done so far, January 20, 2013 cannot come soon enough.

Till then, remember the Obama's new quote: "In the Teleprompter we trust".
