Description
"For the Pnamn, sex is always a battle."The two aliens circled each other in the arena, simultaneously slug-slow and serpent-quick as they darted their flexible heads in thrust and parry. With the heads fully extended, the tentacle-mane retracted, and the tough armor over their cone-shaped lower bodies pulled back, they reminded Enrick disquietingly of a pair of fencing penises. Which he supposed wasn't far from the truth.
"So this is how hermaphrodites do it." There was a hyacinth stink from the audience---the equivalent of mild applause--as one of the combatants faked up, then darted down and to the right, the dagger-like penis protruding from its oral opening knocked aside at the last moment by a frantic block by the defender's own genitalia.
"How long does this last?" Enrick hissed at the ambassador.
"Oh, not more than ten more minutes," she said, "both of them are getting tired. See how the blue markings on their torsos are fading?" She leaned back in her human-appropriate chair and sipped her drink. "I'm assuming you don't want to go to the after-party."
"Why did you bring me to see this, exactly?"
"You're going to have to deal with them," the ambassador said, "and I thought this would be the best way to demonstrate their attitude toward conflict. There is always a loser, and a winner. The loser," she pointed to one of the pnamns, now clearly flagging. Its fight was all defense now, a doomed struggle to beat off its opponent's penis. "So remember this. No matter whether you're doing business with them, or just having polite conversation, _this_ is the interaction they will try to have with you.
There was a *thunk* from the arena, like a fence post being driven through hard soil, and a wash of garlic and lemon from the pnamn audience.
"When that one's dick punctures the mantle of the other, the chalk shell will dissolve and the sperm will migrate through the body to the ovaries and impregnate the loser, who then has to bare the cost of bringing to term and raising the children." The ambassador smiled as she said it, and Enrick mentally crossed her off his list of potential conquests.

What would have happened if evolution had taken a wildly different turn and something like Pseudobiceros hancockanus colonized the land? Their basic anatomy is a hollow, cone-shaped abdomen filled with internal organs and covered by a rigid, chalk-like cage, then a protective sheath. Their upper body is a flexible neck/head, supported (and moved) by rings of erectile tissue around a core of cartilage and chalk. At the end of the neck/head is are the two eyes, the tentacle mane (previously gills, now an organ used for manipulation and chemo-reception), and the oral cavity, which also houses the penis. Mating takes place by forcing the penis through the body wall of the mate ([link] ).
What does this mean for the society of this species? I propose they would consider every contest to be a win/lose scenario. No ties, no mutual benefit, no non-zero-sum games, because if anything happens other than I-win-you-lose, then nobody gets pregnant, and we can't have that happening, can we? What do you think? Comment and tell me!
Also, this species and the scene above are supposed to occupy the same universe (or set of universes) as Nemo-Ramjet's alternate sophonts. (see here [link] )
What relationship do these two characters have with Ramjet's "she" in the sophont parade? I don't know.
Now that I've finished, I realize I should have done this in Nemo Ramjet's style :/

Presumably this culture would have the same feelings accompanying rape that we humans do, only stronger. Which indicates what a barbaric spectacle this is.

I hadn't thought of it before, but I think for a pnamn, "sex" is more than just penetration---it's the whole ritual from the start of the fencing to the end. "Nonconcensual sex" will be a dishonorable behavior like stabbing someone in the back (uh...literally), and yes, probably rigorously punished. Normal, traditional sex is something like what I described in the story (not necessarily a public spectacle, but usually not private---the friends and family of both participants watch and shout advice). Some pnamns work out a contract where one agrees to let itself be impregnated, but that isn't as much fun.

Ah, I see. Let me explain my thinking a little more.
Evolution disincentivizes a person from allowing random strangers to impregnate them, because that means the person will be caring for the baby alone (Obviously this is more relevant for women, but I suspect men have the same response to being raped because of genetic effects "bleeding" across genders). The feelings don't appear when sex is consensual because consensual sex tends to happen between partners who will share the task of childcare.
In the Pnamms, obviously, there is no sharing of childcare duties, and all penetration is non-consensual. Evolution will provide a strong emotional response to failure in one of these penis-fencing contests, in effect telling the pnamm "don't lose again" the same way pain tells you "don't touch that stove again" etc.
So it seems to me like contests will be ritualized, but the combatants will not want to lose.

I like that logic. Two things though.
!) is it possible to raise a sentient baby with only one parent (for a primitive society)? Perhaps the pnamns will evolve "husbandly duties" for the penetrator.
2) It makes sense for being penetrate to hurt like a mo-fo, but soon afterward there will need to be a release of hormones that promote a sense of well-being. Otherwise the penetrated pnamn will be too depressed to properly take care of itself and the baby.

AmnioticOef In reply to bensen-daniel [2012-07-12 06:01:49 +0000 UTC]
!) It shouldn't be impossible if you tweak things accordingly. Maybe lil' Pnamns become independent sooner than humans, reducing the demand on the parent. The "hyper learning" phase in infancy will have to be supercharged compared to a human's to make up for lost time, but maybe that just requires increased caloric intake. Wait...
Hmm, maybe the Pnamns stop growing early on (to reduce caloric intake) but continue to develop mentally, becoming essentially miniature adults. Leaving the...nest...triggers a hormonal shift that causes them to suddenly grow to adult size.
2) Not necessarily. Post partum depression in humans is thought to be an evolutionary adaptation, allowing mothers to look at their situation realistically following pregnancy without emotional attachment to the baby. If things are bleak, it will be easier for the mother to abandon the child and wait for fatter times to reproduce. So a Pnamn might feel miserable until it looks like things are going to work out, and then maternal love can kick in.

That would be a very alien growth-process. Interesting. Perhaps they grow slowly throughout their lives, like lobsters.
Right, but post-partum women (usually, in pre-industrial societies) have a husband and a family to support them. If new mothers were on their own, I would guess their depression would have to be weaker.

That's probably more realistic.
I'm not sure what you mean. Post-partum depression (according to the interpretation I'm using here) is basically an infanticide enabler, so it would be stronger in someone without a safety net. Evolution favors cutting one's losses on a child that is likely to fail to enable a later child to succeed.
Wow that sounds callous.

I suppose you're right.
There's an anecdote about infanticide in Don't Sleep There are Snakes (which is great if you ignore the last section) that more or less matches what you said.

Well, if in the first round no-one managed to make their opponent a "mother" a) they can rest for a while and continue b) they can try to make a deal.
However culture also can influence on what they will do in case of zero-zero result.

bensen-daniel In reply to Charanty [2011-05-05 14:49:15 +0000 UTC]
Oh, that's a very good idea! It might be that ties results are actually more desirable, since they allow some control into the breeding process. (like for example human marriage?)
Perhaps in some cultures the duel is a formality, and the actual mother has been decided beforehand. There could be legal or social arrangements, but also back-room deals and illegal gambling rings. Very interesting!
Thanks for the input!

Neat, and well done-- but I think every sapient species is complex enough to have some variants...so what about an ethnic group, religion, or lifestyle where members always mutually impregnate each other. And perhaps have a somewhat variant set of ethical ideals.

bensen-daniel In reply to 2wsxdr5 [2011-02-10 14:38:15 +0000 UTC]
Probably (a sentient species will try anything once, no matter how utterly disgusting. Concencual child-bearing? How revoltingly hominid.)
But what will determine whether such aberrant behavior becomes common or not is its economic value. Does simultaneous insemination convey some sort of advantage? Maybe. Maybe it ensures that both parents stick around to raise the children. On the other hand you get double the offspring, so it might not make a difference. Something to consider. Thanks.

Damn good story! As Pristichampsus said, this was created and written without any real hint of human homosexuality.
What effects this would have on humans widely exposed to such a sapient species would be very fascinating.

Thanks
the story thing is something new I'm trying out. Check out the other three stories in [link]
I haven't given much thought to this universe aside from the parts apparent in the story and illustration. At least this story takes place in the relatively recent aftermath of contact between humans and pnamns, so we have diplomatic relations, but no cultural mixing yet. What do you think would happen if we did?

So I'm guessing that the "penis" is the pointed apparatus projecting from the mouth, right?
Also, I'm surprised that a story about jousting xenomorphic penes can be written without a hint of latent homosexuality, but you did just that.

bensen-daniel In reply to Boverisuchus [2010-08-01 09:46:06 +0000 UTC]
A) Yes. When I was designing these creatures, I initially mis-remembered them as nudibraches, and not marine flatworms, so the penis is rather like the darts used by snails.
B) Um...thank you?
