Description well, i decided to try my hand at realism, i don't think it came out to badly, though i know i need to work on it some more, ref pic for this was a picture of my mom at a young age, took about a half hour i would say, using the good ole' number 2 pencil.

I'm also from ~critiqueme.

and i totaly agree with what the last two said
i just have a few points to add also... but nothing muc... when it comes to the hair... you might also want to try and make it stand outmore as seprate from the face itself. also maybe add some shine to it by use deep and light values to show the cureves and shine of the hair... or lack ther of (if hair is straight )
also... the nose is pointing toward the viewer when the rest of the head is turned to the subjects left... but that ties in with the alignement issue that Sakuya allready touched on... but besides that i think you did a wonderful job on the nose (noses are always the most difficult for me when drawing a face) but all in all i think your off to a great start... just keep working on your shading and what not and i think you start to turn out some even better drawings

good luck and keep at it

Hi, I'm also from ~critiqueme .

Someone else already mentioned alignments and proportions, so I'll just skip to three points here. First, One thing about this that I think is working well is that you made good use of the whole space. Often times people will try to contain everything into the picture frame, which can work well in some cases, but often it's good to allow things to run off the edges and to allow all or at least three of the edges to have something touching them. That helps create what's called an open composition, and give the impression that there is more to the image than what is seen and is very natural in appearance as well. I know you said you did this from a photo, so it was probably like that in the photo itself, but keep in mind that going off the edges with things usually works very well, like it's working here. Second, her right eye seems to be open a little wider than her left, and normally you would only see the top of someone's pupil like that if their eyes were open very wide with either fear or excitement, or if they were glancing downward. Try lowering her eyelid a tiny bit on her right eye to cover the top edge of her pupil. Lastly, you have done well placing the shadows where they need to be, but I'd like to see a wider range of values. Try adding some darker areas under her chin, her nose, and maybe darken her eyebrows a small amount. Nice work though, and I also like how you made her hair in the bottom right corner so wispy, it looks natural.

Saku-chan from here.. Strange how nobody else from the group has commented.....

Anyways, here goes...
First of all, you do realism a whole lot better than I do (maybe because I'm not trying ).. But...
Be carefull about alignements. If you look at the mouth in comparison to the nose and the chin, you should see what I mean. The eyes are also slightly unaligned, but that might be just me...
A few tiny bright spots in the eyes could work nicely, and as any art teacher will tell you... Don't smudge with your fingers....
The forehead is way too straight, as well, it should be curved way more inwards. Imagine a circle under the head. This circle would be the skull, and the forehead would follow this skull...
That's about all I can see at the moment, the hair is pretty nice, the different features are great as each, though like I said about the mouth and the alignement, they don't qork quite so well together... You're doing great, though, keep it up ^_^
