Since ancient times, man had long held onto their Gods. These deities whose stories had been passed down from hundreds of thousands of legends from all over the world. From the earliest civilizations of Sumer all the way into the 21st century, humans have created their ideal version of how their small portion of the universe came into existence. Humans are such…. easy creatures. A simple explanation of a six-armed elephant or a bearded man in the sky dictating every single decision in your life makes them feel as if anything they do has consequence and that simply committing a few crimes will get them flung into a pit of eternal pain and fire. If that were the case, wouldn’t heaven be quite cold? But I’m getting ahead of myself. This is a story similar to that of those Gods that lived long ago in the hearts of men. However, this legend stood above all others. The Legend of the Eternal Sages.
Before the dawn of man, or even the dawn of life on this world, the elements have thrived. Fire and magma scorched whatever they touched, lightning and wind reigned supreme in the heavens, and the waves of the ocean crashed against the sturdy land, and great glaciers slowly but surely advanced across hundreds of miles of land. Of these primal elements, six beings came into creation. Mortals have given them many names over millennia but for time’s sake I’ll stick the most common names once spoken in an ancient tongue, now lost to humanity. Ironic, yes. They’re also the only names I could remember, so just deal with it. Haltari of the Endless Skies, Tungalar the Thunderer, Hell-Fire Feluz, Kraken: Terror of the Deep, Shiyantu the Earth Shaper, and Hodinur: Ruler of the Frozen Wastes.
Together, these entities represented and controlled all aspects of nature itself. Be it raging hurricanes, devastating earthquakes, and humongous tsunamis to the tiniest flicker of flame or a single snowflake. The great aspects fought in a great war over control of the earth many millions of years ago, which gave rise to the world as it is today. With the aid of water and stone, fire was shoved down deep into the earth’s core. While the wind trapped the thunderer within a haze of clouds from which he couldn’t escape, but he continued to bellow and claw from his prison for thousands of years. And finally, outnumbered, ice’s power was split in two and banished to the desolate twin poles of the world.
This would give rise to the fire, lightning, and ice being known as the Three Primal Energies and water, air, and earth being known as the Three Sacred Pillars. After many millennia the aspects grew bored of their arrangement and the Pillars eventually released the other three in exchange that they all leave the planet called Earth. And so they did, each one using a large amount of their own powers to create whole dimensions in which to live in peace. However each of these planes of existence crossed over into the world as we know it today in specific locations across the globe, and through these, the aspects continued to manipulate the fate of earth from their solitary domains.
The reason the Sacred Pillars are viewed as sacred is that they gave birth to the realm of life as we know it. Cells began to divide in the great ancient oceans that soon fed on the carbon-filled atmosphere. Eventually these children of air and water ventured to land and began to change. Over the course of millions of years and while life began to change and evolve, legends say that the primal energies held resentment towards the children of the ones who imprisoned them ages ago and sought to bring them ruin.
The truth is that the sacred pillars are a bunch of lying pieces of shit. Soon after their children reached the point of consciousness and a certain level of understanding of their surroundings, they started to worship the pillars. Many clusters of humans sprang up, but only a few civilizations ever truly gained the favor of these mysterious and ancient aspects. Through their powers, early humans were able to do wondrous things. Move mountains, part the seas, summon great raging fires and so on. By tapping into the near infinite ‘magical’ energy stored within the elemental planes, they forged mighty empires across the continents. All are lost to the ages now. The Mayans, Sumerians, even the mighty Atlantians. All but rubble and history scrawled in dust.
And I say ‘Magical’ because the frightful powers of the elementals are simply a higher form of science that humans are simply not capable of understanding as of yet. Give it a few million years, you’ll get there. That is not to say that humans are defenseless without the force of the aspects however. Many have found…. alternative means of obtaining power. Such as tapping into the huge surplus of ‘magic’ left deep in the earth’s crust and vast oceans from when the Sacred Pillars still walked the land as you and I. Though the aspect of air absorbed almost all the energy he could back into his own realm. Quite the greedy one he is.
Also some humans took to using the savage creatures they co-evolved with as engines of war. Wargs, griffons, horses, and even wyverns. All living creatures become sacrifices to see whoever gets to say they own a crappy plot of land in some God-forsaken backwater of a shithole. Pathetic squabbles though they might be, battle is all too often necessary in this world of human infighting.
However humans were not born to worship each of the elements. Many who tried ended up taking on more power than they could handle and died in various painful ways. Incineration, petrification, liquefaction, electrocution, or suffocation. But almost every early human who attempted to attune themselves with the aspect of ice were instantly frozen to death or outright unable to tap into the vast reserves of power. Whether this had anything to do with the ending of the ice age at the time wasn’t known, but soon Hodinur grew… envious of the other aspects for obtaining groups of followers in different parts of the world, primitive though they may have been. The reason being that while the rifts between the other aspects realms were in places habitable by humans, his was unfortunately placed almost dead center of the North Pole!
So the elemental lord took it upon himself to offer some ‘incentive’ for humans to live near the rift and receive his blessing. So, breaking his oath with the other aspects, he found a few groups of rugged humans who decided to stay in spite of the terrible cold (though some would call that stupidity…) in what is now central and northern Europe and whispered to them. Though they didn’t understand exactly what the voice said or wanted, curiosity filled their underdeveloped minds and the various tribes in the area. And while the others who feared death and the unknown traveled south away from the arctic shelf, the chosen few ventured north toward the omnipotent voice that continued to whisper to them.
After many months of dangerous trekking through the dense blizzards and many fierce battles with the native wildlife, they arrived. At what, none knew. However two things we know did happen. Those present were imbued with powerful and ancient arcane energies that altered their genome to give their blood an antifreeze protein, decreased blood flow near the skin and extremities, and several other endocrine-based benefits for them to live in their new home. The second is that one human in particular from the Foehammer clan showed particular talent for bending the elements to his will. He would later reunite all the various clans and tribes into one nation and his bloodline would go on to be known across the globe as not only fierce warriors but also as rational peace-keepers that would later call themselves the Frostborne.
The only problem was the fact that they were completely and horrifyingly isolated at the barren cold ass shit top of the God-Damn world! And if you thought isolation made Japan weird, the Frostborne are, almost literally, a different species. Along with the unnatural ability to survive in sub-arctic conditions, natural selection and evolution have allowed for the development to larger eyes to adapt to the lack of sunlight, pale skin due to lack of melanin use, and even a few hunting advantages such as larger and sharper teeth and stronger bones. These physical differences between humans and the geographic separation led many early civilizations to view them in a variety of unique and interesting ways. Some Native American Inuit tribes believed them to be a race of god-like figures that ruled over the frozen north that fought demons and maintained the balance of the world. The Itelmans of Siberia saw them as ice demons that would assault small villages in the night to steal cattle and brought the great blizzards that plagued them every winter.
Of course, none of that matters now. The sub-species of humanoids known as the Frostborne is all but extinct or so diluted to the point that it doesn’t matter. A whole race of people, slaughtered in one brutal war that had one key difference between it and your average genocide. This one was successful.
Which brings me back to my point, humans are stupid, brutish, self-important, greed driven, and most importantly always want to believe the good guys won. Which is why, in November of 2006, when it was announced that the Frostborne, an endangered race of peaceful miners, was hunted to extinction, half the world cheered. So easy to convince…. Put up a fake story saying who launched the first strike and follow that up with wave after wave of propaganda and humans will believe just about anything you tell them. Which just boosts moral when some fat scumbag politician boasts that his/her/their military campaign against the ‘evil Frostborne menace’ was 100% successful.
Well, rounding for error that is. 99.99% success. And for them, it would turn out to be one of the biggest miscalculations in history. Because the very fate of the world hangs on that slight miscalculation. And now we’ll just how to see just how ready this wide world is for a Frostborne to live and fight for not only the spirit of his family, but his entire species.
This ought to be fun to watch. And by now you’re wondering who and why I’m babbling on and on like this am I right? Well, it’s complicated.
But long story short, I am Hodinur. And this story is about one boy’s chance to save his entire race, and his fight to survive in a world that has thrown everything it has at him and then some. This is the story of Patrick Foehammer.

Super glad to see this up, man. The world of Foehammer begins to open at last! Of course you know how I feel about this piece; I enjoyed the multiple POV's and the neat little twist at the end. And for the prologue I think the title fits, though if any ideas come to me regarding the matter, I'll note 'ya for sure.
I'm thrilled to see future installments
