Description I feel a comic idea brewing...

So, any ideas what Twilight Sparkle was having Sweetie belle do this time to practice her magic... something with a unexpected, yet plausible flammable ending?

Something like blowing flour with magic... (flour dust plus flame = Fireball... You should try it someday, it is awesome)

LEGAL DISCLAIMER: Birdco thinks he is a trained professional. Meaning, that he does dangerous experiments with fire and electricity with the delusion of adequacy caused by 6 years of higher education and years of experimenting without getting himself killed. His results are atypical. DO NOT TRY ANYTHING STUPID HE HAS DONE AT HOME

[/legal disclaimer]

Hmmm... Need to come up with a technical drawing for a pulse jet rocket from somewhere... and figure out how Scoots would use it, and fuel it.

Ideas?

I don't know what the plot should be, but it should end with Twilight blowing up!

Everyone seems to have taken all the good ideas. All that I have left is maybe a snow field trying to get Sweetie to blow a snow pile clear then BOOM!

I've seen the flour trick. It can get nasty. Looks cool though.

Well, technically, ONE flammable gas.

People think that oxygen is flammable. By itself, it's not. Light a match in an oxygen enriched atmosphere, and it's the MATCH that explodes.

Le Chatlier's principle...add more of a reactant, the reaction speeds up because of the increased probability that a reaction event will occur. Increased concentrations of oxygen will have a wonderful effect...if it's inert, it may become combustible. If it's combustible, it becomes flammable. If it's flammable, it becomes explosive.

You're right on one thing, though...if a fire gets hot enough, you can't use water to extinguish it...the heat causes the water to decompose into hydrogen and oxygen, which then adds fuel and oxidizer to the higher energy reaction...

Birdco In reply to DolphinSilverwolf [2012-05-24 19:57:34 +0000 UTC]

Combustion is by definition the rapid, exothermic oxidation of a material.

Without oxygen, there can be no oxidation, and thus no combustion, thus Oxygen is the ultimate flammable gas

You light a match in a oxygen rich environment... the match rapidly disappears in a ball of flame...

Hydrogen/ oxygen reactions are so much more energetic when you only have hydrogen and oxygen to react... usually detonating the bell jar you've vacuumed the gas you created through electrolysis... That is why hydrogen and oxygen make the best rocket fuel. It's readily available and extremely energetic (not too bad for the environment either )

DolphinSilverwolf In reply to Birdco [2012-05-25 18:43:05 +0000 UTC]

You're right about "without oxygen there can be no oxidation." But the actual combustible/flammable/explosive part isn't the oxygen. It's the fuel. If you have nothing to oxidize, nothing burns. If oxygen WERE flammable, it could ignite itself.

Oxidation can also occur with other elements, usually light halides. Fluorine, for example, is one nasty oxidizer. You could, in theory, have combustion in a pure fluorine environment...except that since fluorine is so reactive, trying to set up an experiment like this is an exercise in insanity.

Making a combustible lemon, therefore, is simply a matter of applying enough oxidizer...either gaseous oxygen or something that supplies the oxidant through the chemical reaction. It's also the principle behind the oxygen lance...it's just a heat-resistant pipe which feeds oxygen into the fuel at the end...this is usually metallic fuel, although there are demo videos of using unusual fuels...bacon, salami, cucumber...not sure if they've tried a lemon yet...

Combustion requires the fuel, the oxidizer, and the activation energy. I'd be willing to bet Sweetie Belle's talent involves manipulation of all of these, if she can figure it all out...

Maybe Twi was trying to get Sweetie Belle to light a kerosene lamp? (hint, hint!)

I like the Mythbusters saying better: Don't try anything you're about to see at home. We're what you call "experts".

Maybe Scoots' jet pack runs on cider from Sweet Apple Acres, thus getting Applebloom in the mix where some crazy CMC hijinks will ensue? (hint, hint!)

Well, what is also awesome is dropping gummy bears into molten potassium chlorate...

Given that liquid rainbow seems to be a similarly powerful oxidant, what happens if you drop sugary things into it? Slightly off topic for Sweetiebelle but possibly useable somewhere (mythbuckers/Scootaloo's rocket fuel?).

I have two chemistry degrees and so can claim to be a trained professional in this area. Please do not even think of trying the above at home. (If you're interested though, I do have videos, as does YouTube).

Twilight Sparkle: "Okay, Sweetie, this time I want you to try lifting the firefly lamp."
Sweetie Belle: "Uhm, but there's no fireflies in it."
TS: "Well, yes, I let them go because... Well, anyway, it's made of metal, so it should be more receptive to magic without being so, er, volatile."
Meanwhile, Spike is watching the event while munching on potato chips. Cue lifting scene where instead of the lamp lifting up it shoots out a bolt of lightning that lights the potato chips on fire and sends them flying everywhere.
Spike: "Augh! My chips!"
TS: "My books!"
SB: *Sigh*

How would Scoots use a pulse jet? Uhm... How would Twilight use a book? Of course Scootaloo would strap it to something with wheels and attempt to ride it. As for fuel, all I can think of she'd get some corn from a jar courtesy of some earth pony on ol' Rocky Top .

Yeah, just because I took an inductive loop and used to to power a rail gun that can shoot a penny at 350 mph doesn't mean its a good idea.

Especially since if you don't put spin on the pennies, they tend to turn face into the airstream, and basically go anywhere except where you shot them at.

That, and running an inductive loop with a 12v car battery tends to make the car battery explode if you let the loop charge to long. Car batteries have both lead and sulfuric acid in them... so they are both fragmentary and chemical weapons when they explode.

Also, using aluminium for the rails is a bad idea too. Apparently, Aluminium is flammable if you put enough current through it, and when aluminium starts burning... nothing can put it out.

Hmm...unexpected, yet plausible...telekinesis has already been covered, so why not try teleportation? You could have flaming treads on the ground leading up to a lightly singed Sweetie Belle nearby or something. It's a little advanced, but probably not impossible.

As for Scootaloo's fuel issue, why not try liquid rainbow as fuel? I'm sure the CMC can mix random crap with that to find something that makes it more volatile (assuming it isn't effective enough on its own). Housing won't be an issue, but finding a pump to deliver specific bursts of the stuff at a time will be tricky given the limited technology in Equestria. I suppose some bellows could work. They must have that at least.

More magic practice? But Sweetie is still exhausted from her last lessons. I think they should take a break, eat something and drink some lemonade.
And Scoots can use the remaining lemonade...

btw I just googled "pulse jet technical drawings" and found some plans, but they're for model flight... [link] [link]
