Description " Dogs vs Wolves" for Speedy du Jour at
60 Minutes

Reference curtsey of [link]

Under normal circumstances I don't paint canines, and so when I need to, I fall on the almighty backup plan, known as stock photos. Considering I need to get it right enough to differentiate between a wolf and a dog, it was even more essential. Because, left to my own devices, my dogs risk looking like cats. Or horses.

My first instinct would be to paint puppies. They are to art contests what biological warfare is to weaponry. In my meandering search for references though, I came across this rather miffed looking grey wolf, and fell for the idea of taking that and pushing it a bit further with a more appropriate pallet and some angryfying details. The rough painting effect my corel painter blender brush makes also seemed a nice fit for that scruffed and ruffed look. But I do believe I still don't have a proper fur brush...

With a bit more time I would have worked on making some finer hair details, but when the time runs out, it runs out

Profiling-Reality [2011-07-25 16:26:22 +0000 UTC]

I love how fraw and scruffy this looks, it makes the piece look textured and more realistic in a way. There are a lot of 'wolves' here on dA that look just like regular dogs, but yours is not one of those, you can honestly tell what it's supposed to be and beyond that you captured the spirit of the animal within the facial expression of it. Fantastic job.

Practice and more practice will probably get you there It may also be helpful to know that I do the main work in Photoshop, but on the last stretch take it to Corel Painter 11 and use it's blender brush, Coarse oily blender to be precise, and drag the paint about. It's like a very strong smudge tool that has texture to it's teeth.

etaylor In reply to Birgitte-Gustavsen [2011-07-27 21:16:45 +0000 UTC]

Ooh I never thought of that! I have Painter 4 though... and photoshop's smudge tool doesn't do a very good job at anything. Haha.
