THICC THUD*

Never really cottoned to the 3025 TDR-5SS. While I appreciated replacing the anemic Large Laser with a punchy PPC, I felt that was largely undone by dropping the LRM15 for an SRM6, making it more of an in-fighter, or Battlemaster-Lite, than the Trooper of the basic design.

That said, after the devestation of both the Lyran and FedSuns forces, and then the near immediate arrival of the even more destructive Jihad, all were desperate for any kind of units to throw into the meat grinder.

With Port Moseby being miraculously unscathed throughout the fighting, Maverick Industries was in an enviable position to refurbish mechs and armor for the war effort.

One of their most important and succesful designs was the Field Upgrade Kit for TDR-5SS Thunderbolt.

The most extensive and difficult facet of the redesign was replacing the original Ryerson 150 armor plating with the newly developed Durallex Trooper Heavy Ferrofibrous Armor, giving identical protection while saving nearly 3 tons.

Using their proximity to the Draconis Combine, Maverick Industries struck a deal with the Kuritans for access to their new PPC designs, inexchange for doing upgrades and field refit kits for them, also.

This allowed for the old Kreuss PPC to be replaced with a new Lord's Light 2b Snub Nose PPC. Likewise the old Bical SRM6 rack for a new, improved Harpoon 6S Streak SRM6. The original Medium Lasers are retained, as is the Zippo Flamer on it's left wrist. Lastly 2 additional heatsinks were added, allowing it to use it's entire arsenal with barely any heat debt.

Some may bemoan the use of Ferro Armor over an Endo chassis, or lack of Double Heatsinks or CASE for it's SRM reloads. While any or all would be nice, none are really viable for a Field Refit, ESPECIALLY this deep into the most vicous fighting since the Second Succession Wars. Beggars can't be choosers, and when given a choice between an udated version, or running the 5SS unchanged, very few chose the latter option.

Likewise with the conversion costing barely a half a million Cbills per unit (and about 25 BV more), it was an extremely economical upgrade that virtually any unit with their own dropship would be able to afford and convert.
