Description
Commission. Photoshop, Zbrush Blenderp: 75hrs, give or take.... probably give. Derp Froggie is present.
If I won the lotto (lol), I'd buy a state of the art computer and cram as many bleeding edge GPUs into it as possible. Then I'd buy C4D with the Octane plugin. Maybe I'd get Vue too. Definitely Marvelous designer. And I would make hyper realistic furries. For now, this is the closest I can come with just Zbrush, Blender, and Photoshop.
The gal herself was sculpted, UV mapped, and painted in Zbrush. The fur was drawn in Photoshop using these techniques: www.deviantart.com/bjpentecost⦠Mixer brush especially came in handy. The render, which was done in Blender, came out looking like grainy shit-ass, so much so that I am no longer going to be using Blender as my main renderer. I've seen other artists do amazing renders in Blender but I just can't seem to make it happen. No matter how simple my scene is or what settings I tweak, I always get grainy shit-ass and I'm rocking a GTX 780 which isn't a bad card- a little dated, sure, but not bad. And I know it's not me because I have gotten fucking amazeballs renders out of Octane in the past. So I'm sorry, Cycles, but you're gettin the boot. I'll be looking at Marmoset for the time being until Octane's free tier comes out... someday. Either that or I'll try Octane through Unity.
The cloth was also painted in Photoshop. I tried Blender's cloth sim and WOW HOLY SHIT DID IT EVER NOT FUCKING WORK. No matter what I did, the cloth always bunched up into a spiky, hateful little ball. It took me less time to paint the loincloth and brassier in Photoshop than it did to get something not even presentable out of Blender's cloth sim. Maybe it's me though. I dunno. I've always been better at the painting side of things than the 3D side.
So yeah. That's the breakdown. Enjoy! -faceplants on desk-

The process of creating this image was virtually identical to the process outlined here .
You can also see another example here.
Though, sometimes, I do prefer to stay in Photoshop as you can see here .
I hope that answers your question.

lol im saving this reply, dont judge me
so you basically laid out the foundation with 3D, including the background, but not the flowers in 3D... and rest are drawn?
also where do you find these tutorials? i am STOLEN by the one you laid out for the cloth here!!

Those tutorials are mine. You can see the full works in my gallery:

I have a folder dedicated to tutorials though there's not much in there and some of them are in need of updating.
And yeah. My process varies greatly from piece to piece but usually, I lay out the barebones in Zbrush, render, and paint over it. Probably 85% of my works are done that way.

Zbrush does make it quicker, especially for people struggling with anatomy. though ive no experience in Zbrush, im still very impressed on your capabilities! you have my follow. these tutorials will come in handy for me one day ^^ thanks for filling me in!

Thanks. I don't know that Zbrush really makes anatomy easier though. In my experience, it makes it harder because you have to get the anatomy correct from 360 degrees instead of just 1. I sometimes end up with anatomy mistakes coming out of Zbrush that I have to correct in Photoshop. It's kind of a give and take. There are definitely pros and cons to it. But the thing is, I love sculpting, I love painting, and I especially love combining them. It's my favorite method for working. Starting in Zbrush grants me a lot of freedom to experiment before I settle on poses, angles, and composition.
Does that make sense?

3D does initially make it easier to play with the model and come up with epic poses much easier, but i can see molding and creating a character being difficult
and it totally makes sense. no one ever told me which programs are good for animation? or which is best for drawing. i jumped from illustrator, to Flash, to photoshop, to AE, back to Flash, and just... all over the place.
i didnt quite get the chance to combine those and put it to the test due to irl strains... but i did come up with an idea.
so far i concluded that i would want to combine the frame by frame animation power of Paint tool Sai (studying it, and how to draw on it since it... IS different from photoshop.) combined with the After Effects for custom effects, and puppeteer-like effects for results similar to Opening animation in LOL new releases.
and the flexibility of photoshop with its endless ways to incorporate effects without harming a piece at all.
over-all i love photoshop the most. but in terms of animation, its only capable of pixel. rest is a bit... more difficult to manage...
the only serious piece i ever made that took me 50-60 hours was the Tahm Kench one. but i can do better, ill come back to it for sure once things work out

Cool. Photoshop is my first love, at least as far as digital media goes, but I love Zbrush just as much these days. Most of my best works involved both programs. I'd lose my mind if someone told me I needed to go without one or the other. If I had the money, I'd totally get into Marvelous Designer, Vue, and Vray but holy crap, that shit's expensive. Besides, my dinky old compooper couldn't run all that stuff anyway.

i only recently got this new pc who can run photoshop without every stroke having a 2 second delay
and Marvelous designer? ive heard of Z brush, and many other popular studio-used 3D programs... but never that
also going back to photoshop. i feel THE MOST comfortable there. trying to switch to Clip studio will be a pain... ill only use it for animation however.
for artwork. Photoshop will always have a place in my heart. with my shortcuts to flip canvas, H, Z, and R to navigate and set me up within literal milliseconds

Yeah. Photoshop was pretty much my bread and butter for most of my artistic career. Zbrush is a somewhat recent addition (relatively). I could do without Zbrush but I'm pretty sure I could not function without Photoshop. I don't say that lightly.
As for Marvelous Designer, it's a cloth-sim/fashion design program that allows you to design very nice-looking clothes. It's ridonkulously expensive though. :\

ProjectAwesomes In reply to BJPentecost [2018-10-19 16:45:42 +0000 UTC]
neither can i. which is why jumping to Clip will be a pain. so far im getting the hang of the workspace, but not the brushes.
and wait Marvelous Designer designs 3D cloths on your model? sounds fancy ^^ i can see you needing that, though you seem to be holding up on your own in photoshop. i cant imagine how it'd help the clothes blend and do folds that react in color too depending on the environment though. but games do make features like that where if you bypass a light the character and clothes do react... so i cant be the judge of it i suppose
could you give me a critique Note in regards to my tahm kench drawing? .-. i recently lost a competition and my morale is in an all time low. i know i coulda done the background better, but i thought i had it in the bag
π: 0 β©: 1
BJPentecost In reply to ProjectAwesomes [2018-10-19 17:13:18 +0000 UTC]
MD doesn't design the clothes for you. You still have to do all the work but the program really facilitates things nicely by allowing you to easily make clothing patterns and shapes. Also does all the cloth physics for you. It's a topnotch piece of software. I want it SO much. I'm saving up for it but I keep getting hit with financial setbacks. XC Also, there are other things I might end up needing more than MD like Octane Render.
As for critique, are you talking about this image? Ghost-Pirate Tahm Kench?

ProjectAwesomes In reply to BJPentecost [2018-10-19 17:53:04 +0000 UTC]
i imagined it being so. sounds pretttyyyy expensive just for clothes though. but we underestimate how much clothes are needed, even for background. and now that you mentioned clothe physics, yeah i can imagine how difficult it is to apply and create in a normal 3D program...
k now dfqs Octane Render XD
and yeah that one. now that i look at pieces like yourself... i coulda made the creature on the right more realistic in terms of fur...
π: 0 β©: 1
BJPentecost In reply to ProjectAwesomes [2018-10-19 18:12:35 +0000 UTC]
Heh. Octane Render is probably the best GPU renderer out there. I can plug my models in and get almost instant AMAZING-looking renders. Sadly, it's expensive. Supposedly there's a free tier on the horizon but it could be in limbo for months or years for all I know. It's also free through Unity but I don't want to have to futz with Unity just to render if I don't have to. XC For now, I'm going to try Marmoset (another renderer).
Critique time!
Okay, so.... before I begin, let me tell you what you did right: It's clear you've got some skill detailing. The details on your green guy are good in particular. That is something you've got working for you. You've also got a nice sense of story and character going on here. Now, that having been said, let's see how we could improve this...
- Perspective: The background is at a different perspective than the characters. It needs to be tilted down more.
- Detail cohesion: It kinda looks like you ran out of detailing steam on your main guy. He has more detail than everything else. Sometimes, this can work to your advantage. For example, you want background elements to have less detail than foreground elements. Still, consider spending more time detailing everything else. You want a more even level of detail throughout the foreground plane.
- Lighting: You've got some sense of lighting but you might want to push it a little more. It's very ambient for the most part. You want a clearer light source with more defined shadows.
I hope you find that helpful. I don't know if you've ever seen this but you may find it useful: Tips For Artists.

i always thought i just need After Effects or Premiere for rendering
Perspective) ugh... its always the perspectives i have problems with... wont be the first time i work 50+ hours and feel like the floor is out of place... doing a redo on this one will prove a challenge, but ill definitely get to it (saving this reply as well)
Detail Cohesion) you probably mean the box, and the creature to the right, and or table he's standing on... i KNEW the background needed more details. ill definitely come back to it
Lighting) so i want a light source that isnt too ambient
i was just trying to avoid making this too bright. if all i wanted to maybe make this darker, so the lights would be more extreme. as for defined shadows, the octopus and the objects on that same countertop i can see needing a bit more of a touchup. as well as the human figure.
that's a lot to change .-. guess i needed a more clear view of what i want in terms of lighting and such. this was my attempt to just wing it and figure things out later. i did have a specific scenario in mind but i guess i messed up the background and its perspective.
over-all i think i should of made the whole image darker, just bits of the background being visible. most of the objects being concealed in the shadows, and peaking thanks to the floor cracks and door-way opening.
i shall keep this comment without removing it ^^ thank you so much for your expert view on this
i DID work too much on the green creature and not the rest. and i need to get my perspectives in place... back to youtube tutorials i suppose.

This is beautiful! With the clothing, I think you made the right call to paint it, not only because of the trouble you
were having with Blender. By painting it, you get it exactly what you want and I just like the sheer texture of the
fabric and how it clings. Even with simulations, I don't think a 3D skirt would look as detailed as the one you've
painted. The fur is as gorgeous as always, too!
