Description
This is a tutorial on how I vector ponies in Photoshop. Even if you do it yourself it might serve some useful tips. But I have to say, it was really hard trying to put everything you know down like that. Probably forgot some :/Final image:

I was looking around for different photoshop tutorials on how to do some vectors i'm working on (and attempting for the first time), and I decided to try some tutorials of MLP vector art to find exactly what i'm looking for. THANKS A TON. This was a very big help! Now I can finish without going nuts and pull my hair out, and I now also have a handy guide if I decide to try my hand at ponies later.
Thanks again!

I have Adobe Phtotshop Elements 9, I've been wanting to vector ponies for a long time but I can't find the pen tool! Do you know where it is?

No I don't, I only have Photoshop CS3 and CS5. But as far as I've seen, it doesn't seem to support vectors the same way. It doesn't have the pen-tool, only the shape tool meaning you can't create custom shapes.
So you can't use Photoshop Elements 9 to create proper vectors, sorry.

Thank you for replying! I guess i'll try to find another program to vector. I've been using Doink and its pretty good for vectoring. I'll just stick to that

Thank you SO much! THis tutorial is so useful!
Sorry for the silly question but...Uhm...in which format do you usually save, keeping the transparent background? ^u^
I tried GIF, but that didn't worked well... XD

Sorry for the late reply, and I'm glad you found it useful! ^^
I always use PNG when I save with trasparent background.

Oh! Thank you so much! I didn't knew PNG could save transparent images, this is so awesome! Thanks again! ^u^
GIF images' quality is awful, I'm glad there's another format that allows transparency! ^u^

That's quite some amount of work, I wonder which one takes longer to work on if making the same Rarity but with different software, Photoshop or Illustrator? Illustrator is always for me when it comes to vectors.

hmm, nuff' say. i use that same method, but in Illustrator. but the problem with Illustrator: there is not a Free Transformation option as well precise as in Photoshop. and it's too bad.

Thank you so much for this, it's awesomely helpful. I mostly have the hang of the pen tool (I think), but your tricks with masking and duplicating and all are really brilliant.
Out of curiosity, how long does an illustration like this normally take you?

A couple of questions:
Is it basically the same concept using Adobe Illustrator?
Is Adobe Illustrator "better" for this?
Is either one "better".
What are the advantages/disadvantages of using each program?
Which should I choose?
Also, when I try to do it in Adobe Illustrator, there is no option (at least how you described) to "create a vector mask."
Anyhow, I'm just wondering if you're using this because you think it's better or easier or something, or because you don't have Adobe Illustrator.

I prefer using the shape layer option (the one that you circled in blue), but that's just me. ^-^ Great tutorial, though; I'll definitely refer people to this if they ask me any questions about vectoring.
My layer order is also completely different from your's. I like to make separate groups for the body, mane, tail, eyes, clothes or accessories, etc. Then separated again into separate groups for the strokes and fills. This means that I have to use some extra clipping masks, but to me it just seems more organized and easier to find the exact layer I'm looking for.
I think it's interesting how our methods differ; perhaps it's because we learned differently?
Again, great tutorial. I'm glad to be a part of your awesome group!

Okay I've tried to follow this but when I do the outline of the pony then fill the color isn't solid it looks pixleated.. am I doing something wrong I know it shouldn't look that way but I have no clue why its doing that.

It's quite intriguing how I was searching for a few tutorials to see how they do it compared to how I do so, and I'm pleasantly surprised to say that this one, I think, is closest to how I've been doing it the entire time, and this is the first tutorial I explored.
The only thing I tend to do slightly differently is create the whole body with the outline color, and use another layer to add on the main body colors.
Still, it's a rather fantastic commendable tutorial.
If I may speak of a little tip though...
@Fourth bar section, where you begin on Rarity's hair:
You can use the control+click method with the pen tool and it works there too.

About Rarity's hair: If you are talking about the direct selection tool, then read the red part under the same section. Should've been explained there
But still thank you for those kind words ^^

MajorCooke In reply to Blackm3sh [2011-11-09 22:04:55 +0000 UTC]
Heh, I was actually indeed talking about the pen tool itself. Using the control+click method works with both, really.
But yes, I'm surprised at how much you and I are doing the same stuff technically speaking, although you've recently started to incorporate shading into your works such as [link]
I take it that it's also vectors, yes?

Usually it costs around $700 for the full version, though it depends as it can be cheeper if you are a student. Photoshop is usually bought by schools and businesses for professional work and education. Still if you want to buy a universal graphic software, I would defiantly recommend Photoshop, regardless of the price. Most people on the contrary tend to use an illegal copy of Photoshop, so I guess you could try searching online and see if you found a pirated version. Though you didn't heard that from me.

How would you go about changing the resolution? Because when i make a vector mask the lines aren't very clean they are rather pixelled. (i use photoshop cs5)
