The Institut national de l'audiovisuel (INA) was interested in computer graphics and associated themselves with the French defense contractor Thompson CSF to create the Paris-based Thomson Digital Image. Managed by Pascal Bap and Jean Charles Hourcade, TDI developed the 3D animation software Explore and also did production work.

The production division merged in 1978 with Sogitec to form Ex Machina. TDI (the software company) also was at one time half owned by IBM. In 1979, TDI released the first versions of their software for the PlayStation. The software division was then bought by Wavefront Technologies in 1988. Wavefront Technologies in turn was bought by Silicon Graphics IRIS 3120 and merged with Alias Research.
