**THIS IS A STORY!**What a nice sunny day this was.
The perfect kind of day for a walk through the nearby woods, or so you thought.
As you were hiking through the woods, you decided to make your own trail. This was a mistake, because in doing so, you got yourself turned around and lost.
Somewhat luckily however, you were now in a certain large snakes territory…
Basking in the warm mid-day sun on a series of medium sized rocks, the large snake contently relaxed after having recently eaten. She let out a contently blissful yawn, as you unknowingly stumbled into her basking zone.
The snake turned to look at you, as you looked at her, frozen in mid-step.
There was an awkward silence for a few moments...
Finally breaking the silence, the snake spoke to you. That’s right, spoke.
She asked, in a rather calm tone, “Are you lost, stranger?”
You shook your head ‘yes’, in disbelief that the seemingly normal looking large constrictor was communicating verbally with you, and so well too.
The snake smiled as she said, “I figured. People are always finding ways to get themselves lost around here. Not really sure why though…”
She then asks you which way you came from.
Still confused by disbelief, you point to behind you.
“Aah, you came from the south-east. Well, you can’t go much further north. There’s a nasty cliff face there.”
You respond, asking the snake where you can go.
She responds, while slowly slithering off the rock, “Um, well, for starters, you could try going back the way you came, south-east.”
You respond that you only came from the south east because you got turned around, and that you don’t really know what direction you originally came from.
The snake slithers up to you, causing you to get a little unsure…
She stops and responds, “Alright, how about I take you through my territory? If you see anything that’s familiar, then we’ll continue going in that direction until we’re either at my territories borderline or you find your way back home. I’d take you further, but, you must understand that I don’t want to jeopardize my territories security by leaving it unprotected for too long. Sound good?”
Somewhat curious, you ask the snake why she’d even help you.
She responds to your question, “That’s simple. I want you OUT of my territory, before you scare off all the prey that I regularly hunt. Now shall we get moving. We’ve got a lot of ground to cover…”
With no more questions, you agree.
Both you and the snake then start moving through her territory in a easterly direction.
As you are walking beside the snake, you suddenly notice the slight bulge in her middle coils...
You ask her what she ate out of curiosity.
She responds, “Oh, uh...Don’t worry. It was two rabbits. One adult, and one young.”
You both continue the trek through her territory. So far, nothing was looking familiar to you.
Soon you came up to a small creek, it flowed a crystal clear water.
You bend over and begin filling a small canteen you’d brought with you. The snake curiously asks you what you’re doing, between taking some sips of water herself. You tell her that you’re bringing some‘portable water’ with you…
After you filled your canteen, you and the snake started moving again, now in a more north-easterly direction.
The plan was simple. You’d basically circle her territory, going in a clockwise rotation, until you saw something familiar enough that you could get home by yourself.
You came across the cliff face the snake was talking about earlier, it offered an amazingly breathtaking view. She commented on how the valleys below usually offered her pretty good hunting.
By this point, the sun was starting to set, and you were getting tired.
Because this was the snakes territory, she knew where to take you next. It wasn’t much further, and it was a relatively safe spot...
Heading in a southerly direction, you soon came across a mostly intact - but still long abandoned and clearly run down - old shed.
This shed was surrounded on three sides by a few trees. The windows were cracked, the paint was faded, and it had a trashed interior. Still, it was functional as a shelter.
Entering the shed, you plopped yourself down against the back wall, tired.
As you closed your eyes to get some sleep, the snake watched out the window for any signs of potential danger...
As you slept, you also dreamed. You dreamed that the snake was only being friendly so that it could eat you while you slept. Abruptly waking from the nightmare, you saw that the snake was still just watching out the window. She heard you wake up, and turned around to look at you. She said, in her calm friendly voice, “Go back to sleep. I’ll wake you up in the morning.” Shrugging off the nightmare as being just that, you went back to sleep…
The next morning, you woke up to the squeaky sound of the sheds door creaking open.
You looked over at the door, only to see the snake leaning her head in from the outside. She looked at you, saying with a smile, “When you wake up some more, come on outside. I got you some breakfast ready.”
With a stretching yawn, you got up and exited the shed.
You were greeted by the warmth of the morning sun…
Looking down, you see the large snake coiled up comfortably in front of you. She asks you if you slept good the night before. Not wanting to tell her the truth, you tell her that you slept good. You then ask her about the ‘breakfast’ she said she had for you. After the previous days hike, you were pretty hungry…
She uncoils herself and slithers off into a nearby bush, grabbing onto something with her jaws and pulling it back out. She brings herself and what she dragged from the bush back in front of you.
The snake then slithers back, away from your ‘breakfast’, a small wild pig.
You look down at the little pig, then at the snake. She says, “I hope you like it. It wasn’t an easy catch, even for me. Speedy little thing ran away from me, so I had to follow it until it thought it was safe and stopped to rest...”
You bent down and picked up the pig, bringing it into the shed.
Inside the shed, there was an old small stove, with plenty of mostly dry wood nearby in a pile.
Lighting the stove with a box of matches you also found in the shed, you began cooking the pig.
Without a knife, you use your fingers to ‘dig’ at and rip the meat off the pig, stuffing any meat chunks that tore off into your mouth. After you finished eating your fill, you put out the stoves fire, and used some of your canteens water to wash your hands and face. You and the snake then left the shed and continued heading south…
You asked the snake if she was hungry because you didn’t see her eat any breakfast.
She responded that, being a snake - and eating the day before - meant that she didn’t have to feed again for a while.
You continued heading south, still no signs of anything familiar.
Finally reaching the south-est point of her territory, you turned and began heading westbound. It was now mid-day…
You stopped for a moment under the shade of a large tree to take a break.
Opening your canteen, you took a drink of water, then offered it to the snake. She opened her mouth underneath the canteen as you poured some water into it. She swallowed the water. After you both quenched your thirst, you continued onward...
A few hours later, the evening sun was setting.
Stopping on a hilltop overlooking a clearing, you took in the beautiful sunset with the snake.
As night fell, you and the snake headed into the clearing below. You got yourself comfortable. Well, as comfortable as sleeping on the ground could be...
Getting a chill from the cool breezes of the night air, you began to shiver. The snake, who was again watching for threats, saw you shivering. She asked if you were getting cold on the ground. You looked at her and nodded ‘yes’. The snake then slithered over to you. She coiled herself into a comfortable position, and motioned you over. You sleepily crawled into her coils. She wrapped herself around you like a scaly blanket. Covering you in her coils, she insulated you. Who’d of thought being in a snakes coils could be, surprisingly, quite relaxing…
You fell asleep moments later, surrounded by the snakes many coils...
You woke up the next morning, it was now day three.
The snake coiled herself off of you.
You stretched, as the snake slithered off towards a nearby bush. Seeing the snake slither off, you asked her where she was going…
The snake stopped, she turned around with a half smile, before responding simply, “Probably got to get you some more breakfast, right? Should be back in a few minutes, if I’m lucky…” The snake then took off silently into the surrounding brush.
A few minutes went by.
You took in the sunrise, it all seemed quiet. Maybe too quiet.
Suddenly, you hear something give a low rumble behind you.
When you turn around, you see that you are now face to face with a hungry wolf. It snarls at you, before charging - teeth bared.
Before it can attack you however, a quick flash of scales rushes past your left side, and around the wolf. Your snake ‘friend’ had dived in for the rescue…
You watch as she coils herself around the wolf, and constricts it hard. As she does that, the wolf - in vain - tries to escape and bite at her.
Soon enough though, the wolf stops struggling, as the snake finishes it off.
With the wolf seemingly no longer a threat, the snake uncoils herself off of it...
In a winded tone, she asks if your alright. You tell her that, yes, you are alright.
The snake sighs in relief...
You then ask her what she intends to do with the wolf now.
After looking at it for a moment, she responds, “...Leave it…”
With that, you leave the wolf behind…
Looking back, you see that the snake didn’t actually kill it - and instead just made it unconscious when she constricted it. The wolf turns around and runs off, clearly you were not worth it…
You look at the snake, asking her as you walked, why she simply didn’t kill the wolf.
The snake suddenly stops slithering. This causes you to stop.
She looks at you and responds, “Simple. It wasn’t a threat anymore. Why would I kill something when I don’t really have to? Bad enough I got to do that for my own personal survival reasons…”
She added that she also knew of THAT wolf. It was outcast from its pack after it broke one of their pack laws, it killed one of its own for a seemingly unjustified reason. And, as a result, it now was a ‘lone wolf’.
At least, that’s what the wolfs pack mates said about the matter, anyway…
She then starts slithering again, saying to you as she slithers past, “Come on. Let’s keep moving.”
Continuing westbound along her territory, you soon come up to a raging river.
The snake slithers through the trees ahead of you, as you walk along the river bank. She yells out to you over the raging nearby water to be extremely careful going through here.
Up ahead, you see that the river bank is muddy. You cautiously step through the mud, but it doesn’t do any good. You slip in the mud, and are about to fall into the rushing river, when the snakes tail wraps itself around you…
She tries to pull you back, but the branch her tail was wrapped around snaps under the force. You fall into the river, getting sucked down stream by the strong current. On the shore, you see the snake slithering through the trees - trying to catch up to you…
She fails. Luckily though, she knows where the river smooths out up ahead.
The snake slithers up ahead to try and intercept you there...
Meanwhile, you’re making your way through the river, being pulled along uncontrollably by the strong current.
Eventually though, the choppy river smooths out...
Looking over to a smooth part of the bank, you see the snake there waiting for you. She spots you, and ‘dives’ into the calmer water, swimming towards you. She helps bring you back to the shore…
Once you’re both on the shore, the now tired snake looks over at you, and in a more stern tone says, “Hey. I said BE CAREFUL!…”
With the day now going into a sunset, you both got some sleep. It was easy this time, considering how tired you both were…
Day four began with you getting some breakfast, and refilling your canteen at the rivers smoother spot. You now had reached the farthest westward point of the snakes territory.
Moving north-west now, and running out of options for familiar markings, you began to lose hope.
The snake reassured you that, together, you’d find the way back home…
You continued north-west, going through large open long grassy fields, and some mildly hillier ones…
Day five, mid-morning...
Now you had almost completely explored the snakes territory.
Things were beginning to look bad for you. You soon came up to a, well, ‘rock field’.
At least, that’s what the snake called it.
The area ahead was full of jagged, razor sharp, rocks. Some small. Some large. One misstep, or misslither, here could easily impale you, or seriously cut you...
Carefully jumping from rock to rock, making sure not to misstep, you both made it through. You were now at the final rock to clear. Perfect timing too, as a heavy fog was now beginning to set in...
Looking ahead in the distance, you finally recognized something familiar, a patch of trees near a small lake.
You were almost to the trail back home.
Suddenly there was a ominous howl…
Freezing in place, you stood still. The snake flicked her tongue, trying to pinpoint the source of the scent.
It was now eerily quiet...
The snake continued slowly flicking out her tongue.
Suddenly, she sharply turned her head to the left, as she yelled out to you, “GET DOWN!”
Diving down in the nick of time, the wolf the snake spared days earlier jumped out of the thick fog, right at you. It flew over top of you, landing to your right, claws scratching against the rock you were on...
Going into action immediately, the large snake slithered between you and the wolf. She locked eyes with the wolf, and gave it a warning hiss, as she also coiled herself into a defensive position.
The wolf wasn’t backing down however. It charged with bared teeth right for the snake. She strikes back, hard and fast…
Just like that, they begin fighting in front of you. It looked pretty gruesome, to say the least…
As they fought, the snake told you to run while the wolf was distracted. Not really having anything to defend yourself, you obey the snakes command and run off, towards the small tree patch.
You can hear the snake and wolf continuing to fight behind you.
You keep running, not wanting to look back - for fear of what you may end up seeing.
Just as you make it to the tree patch, you hear the wolf howl in victory. It appeared to have won...
Hearing the wolfs howl, you begin to wish you’d stayed to help...
Day seven, late-morning...
After not seeing the snake since you left the battle two days before, you walk off, feeling a tad sad…
At mid-day, you come across a trail. You remember this trail. It’s the one you take to get back home.
So it seems it ends as it began, around mid-day.
You suddenly hear something rustle a bush nearby, on your right. Fearing it was that lone wolf again, you stopped walking…
Emerging from the bush however, was a heavily scared up and just generally worse for wear familiar face. It was the snakes...
You, upon seeing that it’s her, run up to her and pick her up in your arms. She grunts from pain, and loudly exclaims, “Oohh! Put me down! Put me down! Put me down! Ow! Ow! Ow!”
You gently put her back down, and ask her what happened after you ran away.
She says that she put up a good fight, so to did the wolf. It knocked her down at one point, dazing her.
The wolf foolishly thought that she was defeated, and victory howled prematurely. This distraction allowed her to get the upper tail...
She was able to quickly wrap some of her coils around the wolfs legs, and fling it off the rock. It landed onto the more jagged rocks below, where, it impaled itself...and was now dead…
She was so sore that, after the fight, she had to rest. That’s why she didn’t immediately come looking for you.
You thank the snake for saving you, again...
The snake smiles before responding, “Yeah, well. I’m sure you’d have done the same for me. Considering how many times I saved you, and all…”
You look up ahead at the trail, the trail that would take you back home.
The snake sees you staring down the trail. She speaks, with a slightly saddened tone, “Well. I guess this is a goodbye then, huh?”
You look at her and tell her that it’ll be alright, and that maybe you’ll see her again someday...
She jokingly responses, “Heh, I hope not. I’m sure you just gave yourself enough adventure for a lifetime. You sure did me.”
You chuckle in response.
The snake smiles at your amused chuckle, before sighing, and saying, “Alright. Take care of yourself, friend.”
You tell her that you will, and start walking down the trail…
You turn back one last time, only to see the snake had already disappeared into the dense vegetation around you.
Still, you call out, asking the large snake if she has a name.
Seemingly from above you, the snake responds, “My name is Susan.”
You smile at the name, as you turn around and continue walking down the trail...
As you are walking off, the snake drops her head down from some branches over head, and watches you as you leave her territory…
