how did you get this effect? i'm trying to get better in my photography and for me it is just so hard to create such a pleasing bokeh effect. i've seen it so many places and i want to learn..

It's all about light and aperture. You need a background with different shades and maybe some highlights. Here it's my garden in the background while the sun was shining.
When you take photos like this one you need to use a big aperture (means a small number). This way the depth of field is very small and only objects in the foreground are in focus, everything else is blurry. Using a small aperture the background wouldn't be that blurry.
I don't know which camera you're using, all the stuff I'd said is for SLR-cameras. If you have a compact camera you can use its macro mode I guess.

i've tried, and i can only get the aperture to a specific number. i have a canon powershot SX130 IS. the problem is that by the time i get things that nicely blurred, i have to bring the object within like an inch of the lens if not closer... i also can't figure out how to get that sort of blur with the subject being a person..you know, like those people in fields....all the photography books talk about mechanics and apertures but don't give you the how-to info, which is crap..

Hm... well I just googled a little and have to say from what I've read, it's quite difficult to get a pleasant bokeh effect using a compact camera. :/ As you say, you need to get very close to your objects and have to use the macro mode. But I found a tutorial [link] maybe it's helpful, but since I don't own a compact camera I can't tell for sure.
Talking about the books. I guess you have to search for books which are more like a 'photography school' or something. Those books give more information about how-to. Else you can search the internet, I'm sure there're some tutorials and stuff.
