Backstory:
Splatter Spark was born into a loving family of four (including himself); his father (a pegasus), his mother (a dragon), and his older sister, who was a hybrid much like himself. He was born unusually small, almost half as small as his sister had been at birth. Splatter took more after his mother in appearance, but more after his father in personality. Even so, he had always held a closer bond with his mother. His small family lived in a small cottage on the edge of the Everfree, almost completely shut off from both dragon and pony society. Despite his little interaction with the outside world, he had always had a yearn for adventure, and to make new friends. He had attempted to sneak out on multiple occasions, but his mother always caught him before he could get very far. Splatter enjoyed making up stories about what he imagined life the outside world was like. His stories were always so full of action and suspense that when his father, a dare devil travel writer, read his creations, even he was left on the edge of his seat. Splatter never truly understood why his family (especially his mother) had to stay hidden, until one day he finally succeeded in sneaking outside and bumped into a small group of young stallions. He tried to make friends with them, but was instead met with violence. They threw stones at him and pulled his mane and wings, calling him a "freak" and a "monster". His mother heard his cries for help and quickly rushed outside, snarling and blowing fire at the attackers in attempts to protect her son. The stallions fled, but his mother knew the trouble wasn't over yet. Knowing both Splatter Spark and his mother would be reported to the authorities, they had no choice but to leave and go into hiding. Despite the grim position he was in, over the years Splatter stayed optimistic and continued writing, hoping that one day this would all blow over and they could return to their normal lives. Splatter's mannerisms continue to be mostly dragon-like, being raised alone by his mother. He remains mostly carnivorous and carefree, but is careful not to blow their cover.
Cutie Mark Story:
Splatter had always wanted to publish his first action novel so it could reach more ponies, and excite them as much as his story excited him. His mother, however, discouraged this decision for many reasons. She didn't want Splatter to spread his name around, but he protested that he'd use a pen name. One of the main protagonists in his story was a dragon, and the story was heavy with dragons being characterized as loyal and noble. His mother liked the characterization, but feared that it would spark controversy among the ponies, and eventually they'd trace the book back to him. Splatter argued that dragons deserved a positive characterization for once, and that maybe his book would be something of a wake up call. Without his mother's permission, he sent a draft of his story to a publisher in Ponyville under the pen name "A. Applewood". He was pleased to discover that his draft had been approved with high praise, and was on it's way to becoming his first published book. He was extremely proud of himself for making this accomplishment at such a young age (about 15 in human years), and it was then Splatter realized that this was definitely the life path he wanted to follow. He realized his passion and love for bringing excitement to others through his literature, earning him his Cutie Mark. The calligraphy pen represents his love for writing, and the sparkling green flame represents the thrill and excitement spread through his stories.
