Yeah, so I decided that that outfit I came up with for Penny earlier is her college getup.

So in my headcanon, Penny and Gumball go to rival colleges, but they continue dating. Seeing how rival schools usually are, I can see potential for an episode where this causes serious problems for them at first.

As for this particular scene, I think what's going on here is Penny conked out earlier during their date, as a result of lack of sleep due to her extracurricular activities, including working at a coffee shop to save up for their future. Towards comedic effect, she has also embarrassed herself in various ways during said date, but Gumball's keeping that to himself of course.

Geez, I don't usually exposit that much in these descriptions.
