Seeing all the other teams getting ready had gotten Jenji excited, the dun paint mare realising that something was going on as she watched horses and pack animals getting tacked up with a buzz of excitement and nerves in the air.

As soon as she spotted Maleah entering the stables the young mare would let out a whinny, kicking at the door a couple of times in her eagerness to get out and see just what was going on. After giving the mare a bucket of food, she’d turn to start gearing up the dogs. Cygnus and Daria wagged their tails excitedly as they stood patiently as Maleah put their boots on one by one, first starting with the larger red colored male, and then moving onto the tan point female, before strapping the saddlebags to their backs, clipping the belly and chest straps, and ensuring that they were secure and comfortable.

By time she was done gearing up the dogs, the Ridgeback had finished her food and popped her head back over the stall door, her ears erect and twitching, letting out a gentle nicker of impatience as she watched her rider go and grab her tack, returning to put the saddle over the stall door before pulling back the latch, stepping into the stall with the mare and starting to fit the bridle over her face, Jenji standing there patiently before she was led out of her stall and the saddle was lifted onto her back, beginning to paw at the ground as Maleah secured the girth and straps. The dogs stood patiently nearby, their eager gaze watching the horse being tacked up, Cygnus tapping at the ground occasionally with his front paws in anticipation.

“Right then” she’d say quietly once she’d put on the last of the horse’s boots before moving on to check that she had packed everything into the dog’s saddlebags, and whatever they couldn’t carry would be attached to the mare’s saddle. Once certain everything was accounted for she’d gather Jenji’s reins, patting her leg for the dogs to follow, and lead them all out to the starting area. The area was busy, with some teams already having taken off, she’d stand to the side with her animals and await for their number to be called.

As soon as it was, she’d take the leashes off the dogs and stuff them into her pockets, before jumping onto Jenji’s back. Knowing it was soon to be their turn the dogs would let out a series of excited barks, their tightly curled tails wagging, while Jenji would paw at the ground. Patting the mare’s neck, they’d all wait in anticipation for the start signal, and as soon as it started, they’d take off.
