6. A name for the Innocence
---
Another couple of weeks later and Gramble called Ash over to the living room. Here they’d play board games, discuss the day, or she’d listen to him as he reads a book to her and her brother. As the dark gray grumpling entered the room eagerly, she saw how the pink grumpus held the beeper in his arms. Her brother was already asleep and purring. When Gramble noticed Ash’s presence, he waved her over to join him, which she obliged. As soon as she sat comfortably on the couch, she looked to the pink grumpus with raised brow. “Are you going to continue the book you have read to us yesterday?” She asked, while her tail wagged, excited to find out how the part of that story went. That doesn’t seem to be the case as he shook his head. “Maybe later, but for now, would you like to help me with somethin’?”
Ash wasn’t sure what she could help with. Sure, there were the dishes that needed to be cleaned, or vacuuming the floor, and other times she helped out in the garden. But as far as she recalled, she had vacuumed the living room today. As the dark gray grumpling scooted a bit closer to Gramble, her brother stirred slightly in his sleep, but thankfully didn’t wake up. There she remembered to speak in a hushed tone as to not wake him up. “What can I help you with?” She whispered, still unsure what Gramble needed help with. It is then where she followed his gaze down to the sandy colored beeper. He has grown quite a lot in these past few months and his baby spots started to fade. It won’t be long until he would become quite the energetic toddler. He certainly keeps the pink grumpus awake, as she could hear his cries from time to time in the other room. She trusted Gramble enough to leave her brother alone with him for a long amount of time, as long as she gets to see him still.
“I remember you tellin’ me that your brother lacks a name.” Gramble pointed out, which Ash agreed with a nod. “I’ve used some of my time to come up with several ones, and I’d like to discuss them with you.” Ash blinked a few times, as if trying to comprehend what he just suggested. All this time, since her brother’s birth, no one bothered to give him a name, not even the caretakers. Mostly because she would growl at them if they even think about taking him away from her. Some of her former foster parents gave him names she didn’t like and being told that it’s not on her to decide. She’s only a grumpling after all. At this moment she had a fuzzy feeling in her chest, that Gramble wanted her to be around and hear her opinion. “Y-Yes, that’s what we can do.” Ash finally managed to respond to the pink grumpus, and together they took the time to discuss the names Gramble came up with, but also some that Ash had in mind.
A few sounded decent. Brufus. Grennard. Lorem. Others didn’t sit well with Ash, as they sounded too similarly to her biological parent’s names. Though while feeling unwell, instead of growling at Gramble, she would explain to him why she didn’t like the name, and to her relief, he assured her that he won’t pick a name that she didn’t like or those that cause her to feel unwell. “Now that I think about it…that name I just said…Lemmy…I don’t want my brother to become a target for mean grumps.” Ash grumbled while rubbing the soft surface of the couch. Both grumpuses soon run out of names, and not a single one stands out. While Ash contemplated to pick Grennard, Gramble’s blue eyes widened, as if he got a flash of idea.
“How about…Charwee?” Ash put a paw over her mouth as she considered the option. It certainly is a name that is not tainted by her former folks and has not been used by the foster parents before. “Charwee…Charwee…” As the dark gray grumpling repeated the name a few times, she observed how the beeper yawned loudly and purred, still being asleep. He must have a good dream, or…he actually liked the name! “It looks like the name has been decided.” Ash declared, pointing to her brother. “And…I honestly like the sound of that name.” Gramble looked between Ash and the beeper in his arms, and for a brief moment, the dark gray grumpling saw him frowning, as if he had a bad memory from past days. “Alright…Charwee it is then.” The frown disappeared and was replaced by a smile, as Gramble cradled the sandy brown beeper. Charwee. The new name of her brother. Ash couldn’t feel any happier. Gramble managed what no grumpus before him could, and it was giving her brother a name that she liked too. But…is it really that?
Certainly not, but Ash was too preoccupied with being happy for her brother, that she didn’t dwell on it any further. For the first time, that felt so long, she purred. She felt at home. Just like how a family should be.
