“Syaoran-chan!” he heard Princes Sakura’s cheerful voice chime. He looked up from his history book to see the beautiful princes standing before him, a warm smile on her face, here head tilted to one side and a bouquet of cherry blossoms in her hand. Syaoran silently wondered where Sakura had gotten cherry blossoms in the desert, but then shrugged it off as a phenomena that was a most pleasant dream.
Sakura happily skipped over to Syaoran and knelt down beside him. “I’ve been thinking, Syaoran-kun”
Syaoran closed his book and set it aside. “About what, Your Majesty?”
Sakura giggled. “About that! We’ve been friends for a very long time. I think we know each other well enough to just use our names. You can call me Sakura if I can call you Syaoran.”
“If you say so Your Maj… Sakura.”
Sakura gently rested her head on Syaoran’s knee. “Oh, Syaoran, I want to remember this day forever.”
It was then in that perfect moment that Syaoran awoke, returning from blissful dreams to dark reality. He propped himself up on his elbows and gazed across the room at Sakura’s sleeping figure. He sighed a deep, nostalgic sigh. It was longing for Clow, for the days when he was innocent, for the days when Sakura knew him.
He missed her. Even though she was less than ten feet away, he missed her, because the wost way to miss someone is to look right at them, love them and know that they can never love you. He envied her such ignorance. Sakura would never know what she had lost, or even that she had lost anything. Sakura would never grieve. Even if she knew what to grieve for, the pain, along with the memories of Syaoran would vanish. For her the pain was provisional, temporary. But for Syaoran, the pain would remain; growing stronger with each time the princes wondered if she had known him and in an instant forget the question entirely.
“I want to remember this day forever.”
“I want you to remember it too, Your Majesty,” he spoke aloud to the darkness. “But I promise, Princes, that I will not rest until you remember all of you other days, even if those days don’t include me. I love you. Even if you can’t know that.
“The important thing is, Syaoran-kun, you can.” Syaoran looked to the other side of the room to see Fai turned on his side facing him. “Sakura-chan may not remember you, but you remember Sakura-chan. You have her, Syaoran-kun, every time you close your eyes.” Fai looked behind him and laughed. It was only then that Syaoran realized that Kugogane was snoring.
As Fai returned to sleep, Syaoran laid back down, keeping his gaze fixed on Sakura. He closed his eyes and, just as Fai had said, he saw Sakura holding a bouquet of cherry blossoms. Quietly he whispered, “I love you. Sakura”
