Description
Portrait of Taylor Swift done in graphite. I've been working on and off since October and I'm finally done. I've spent the last four days on her hair alone. I'm submitting this as part of my USC portfolio for the School of Architecture. This has been submitted into AquaMaritime's "Give It (Music) A Face" Contest. Check it out: [link]

Oh wow this is amazing!
I recently did my first attempt at drawing with shading and such. For a first attempt I thought it was pretty good, but then I saw this (I tried to do the same picture! ) and my looks so.... UNAMAZING LIKE YOURS!
Just wondering, do you have any tips for people wanting to be able to do this?

Sorry this took so long to reply to. It was the last few weeks of school and finals came before DA
My best advice is to practice, practice, practice. Your first pieces won't be all that great (I've been meaning to post mine to prove that) but as you work, you'll learn. At first, you'll be drawing something difficult, like hair or an eye, and you'll get really frustrated because you can't get the likeness. But as you draw more and more you'll find that the next time you do hair, you won't be frustrated. Hair is actually one of my favorite things to draw now!
As for basic tips, remember that real life isn't made out of lines. When you're shading, don't try to outline the face or the eyes or any part of the face. Create a line by drawing the meeting of a lighter and a darker value. That's how what you see around you creates the illusions of lines.
Read some good books. My favorite was "Secrets to Drawing Realistic Faces" by Carrie Stuart Park. It really helped me to get over the common mistakes.
I guess my only other piece of advice would be to layer. Start out light and layer on the darker values. You'll start to develop an eye for values and be able to pick out where things should be darker or lighter. Oh, and a kneaded eraser is your best friend, especially when it comes to drawing hair!
If you're working on anything in particular and want specific advice, I'd love to take a look at it and help you out Good luck and don't ever give up when it gets hard

I'm not a big fan of Taylor swift but this pic is amazing. The only problem I see with it is the hand looks a bit flat to me. Still, this is an excellent piece, the hair and lips especially.

My favorite piece of your gallery!
You really captured her features, she looks beautiful. I admire the shading. One constructive critism though is that on the left side of her neck there seems to be a thick black line, if its supposed to be a neck muscle, a little more curve could define it better. My favorite part of this piece is the hair, it is beautifully done!!!!

Thank you so much! I had trouble with that part cuz it looked strange in the reference. I never got back to fixing it, oops! I loved drawing her hair because it was so complicated. It was a fun challenge I'm so happy you like it!

My hair is blonde and wavy/curly like hers. My friends either compare me to her (when my hair is neat) or Ke$ha (when my hair is a mess)
I'm looking forward to starting it because I've been planning to do another for a while!

It's paper from Strathmore's 8X10 drawing pad. It's a little brown spiral bound pad with three pencils on the cover. I found mine at Michaels but they can be found in most art/craft stores
