Portrait of Taylor Swift done in graphite. I've been working on and off since October and I'm finally done. I've spent the last four days on her hair alone. Thanks! I would recommend reading a couple books to break your mind of the things it has been trained to draw (eyes really aren't almond shaped and faces aren't round). My favorite was called "How to Draw Realistic Portraits" and was really good at showing me things that I was messing up on.
After that, practice is really important. You'll be working on hair and cursing it as you draw but sooner or later you will get used to it and stop. That's when you know you've gotten better. Everyone draws differently, so you kind of have to just play around and find the weaknesses you want to fix.
The most important thing is to not give up when it gets frustrating (believe me, it will) and to learn as you work. Your first few pieces aren't going to be perfect, but you'll learn from each of them and be able to develop as an artist.
