Description
An illustration for the Brother's Grimm fairytale, Cat-Skin - read it, if you dare!I had to keep this under wraps for a bit because it was for a contest with anonymous entries. But that's all done now, so here it is
edit: Thanks so much for all the comments! I really appreciate it!
It's a disturbing little story, isn't it? I had the same problem when I first read it: I thought she'd married her pervert dad! Then I realized she'd married some other king and everything was okay
Also, I'm in no way condoning or supporting the fur industry - it's just part of the story.
I made a little step-by-step. Not really a tutorial, because there's not much to learn from it. But you can see it here: [link]

love this. and thank you for the step by step. I'm sure you probably get lots of Rackham comparisons (which is a compliment) but your art is very much your own style. Very cool. thank you.

This is such a lovely depiction of a fairytale. I've always loved that story. Except, wouldn't this be the version called All-Fur, since her coat is made of all kinds of animals?

The dress! Not every artist can conjure the props of a written fairy tale into illustrations. So lovely. The cloak is also a successful evocation of an impossible thing.

This is AMAZING. I was searching for a traditional illustration for Allerleirauh and came across this and couldn't figure out why I couldn't find the original artist before I realized you ARE the original artist.

Must be the same story line as donkey skin or bear skin. Odd story but then again to touch upon child abuse and all the other morbit hard times a young kid had to face in the time and age still inspires some of the best works.

I am not familiar with this Grimm tale (thought I knew all of them) but this beautiful picture would not be out of place in a fairy tale book. It reminds me of Arthur Rackham's work. Superb!

I love this story, much more interesting than any of the other Cinderella variants. My book calls it "The Princess in Disguise." I love the style, very Arthur Rackham!

This also reminds me of the rendition of Beauty and the Beast by Angela Carter, The Tiger's Bride, I would suggest giving it a read, it's in her book of short stories "The Bloody Chamber"

This is amazing! Reminds me of the Golden Age of illustrators- I really thought it was a scan of a vintage piece until I saw the step-by-step link! I am in love with all of this; the dress almost matches the way I see it when I read the story. Wow to nth degree

The story is pretty twisted, come to think about it. Her father wants to marry her and I'm not quite sure if she does manage to get away from him in the end with her furry disguise.
The illustration is gorgeous, nonetheless.

This is - lovely, remarkable...if there are words, they all describe this. It's the perfect style for illustrating a Grimms' fairy tale. The cats are a tad gruesome, but the princess is pulchritudinous. I wish you'd illustrated my fairy-tale books. And of course, the textures! The skin against the dress (which is a wonderful dress, really - stars fading into the colours at the bottom hem) against the motley of furs. And the tiny detail - tear on her cheek?
