Biography

Little is known about Charlie's life before the events of the series, but in general it is implied he lived a normal middle class life in a suburban community. Eventually, he would become a member of the "Smiling Friends", a small organization which accepts contracts to make sad people smile. During this time he would meet Pim, another member of the Smiling Friends who would go on to become his best friend.
Charlie usually works with Pim during jobs, and almost always succeeds in making the client feel better. However, a bit of a rift would form between Pim and Charlie over time, as Charlie's more apathetic personality would often make Pim feel like he didn't really care about their job. This resulted in an argument one Christmas eve when, while looking for a Christmas tree for the office, Pim told Charlie he was "Putting everyone in a bad mood" by expressing his frustration with working on Christmas eve. Charlie took offense to this, thinking Pim was reading too far into his behavior, and expecting him to be unreasonably cheerful most of the time. Ultimately, Charlie angrily took the axe they brought and began to aggressively start chopping down a tree, meaning to taunt Pim by proving he was capable of getting into the holiday's spirit. Unfortunately, with his haste and lack of caution, Pim would cut the tree so that it would fall in his direction, crushing him and killing him instantly.
Charlie awoke in Hell, discovering that the underworld had quite literally frozen over, on account of the Devil growing depressed. Sensing an opportunity to escape, Charlie decided to strike a deal with the Devil, making the demon promise that if he could make him smile again, he would be brought back to life. Charlie had a rather rational discussion with the Dark Lord, identifying the source of his malaise as a sense of aimlessness, telling him he needed to find a more consistent goal in life to start feeling better. The Devil felt insulted by this, especially when the conversation turned to Charlie suggesting he might be addicted to vaping. Infuriated, The Devil began to torture Charlie; however his sadistic enjoyment of Charlie's suffering caused him to laugh evilly. Charlie quickly identified this as having fulfilled his half of the deal, having made him smile, and therefore being entitled to resurrection. The Devil didn't want to honor his end of the bargain, as he had grown to hate him, but before he could have Charlie permanently condemned God Himself came down from heaven and lifted Charlie out from Hell. Before bringing Charlie back to life God explained that this was all a test to help him confront his own problems, and brought him back to life.
Emerging unharmed at his own funeral, Pim reunited with Charlie and apologized for having the argument which resulted in his death. Since then Charlie has gone back to work with the Smiling Friends.

Appearance
Charlie is a "Critter"; a type of creature which , while having considerable physiological differences from a human, appears to have the same mental capacities.
Roughly identifiable as a man in his thirties, Charlie is an overweight, yellow critter who, while mostly humanoid, seemingly has no neck, with his "r" shaped head instead protruding from his body seamlessly. His nose takes up the entirety of the upper half of his head, and his eyes appear as two small black dots. He is mostly bald, with a few long hairs on the back of his head. He usually wears sneakers, jeans, an orange hoodie, and a brown baseball cap.
Personality
Charlie has a somewhat laid-back, apathetic personality. The fact that he chose to make people happy for a living implies he is somewhat compassionate, but he has demonstrated on multiple occasions that he is not exceptionally invested in the well being of strangers, as seen when he and Pim were hired to cheer up a suicidal man, and he at first wanted to just give up; as well as when later, believing that there was no way to help him, seemed unphased by the knowledge that his failure would result in the man's death.
Charlie takes life as it comes and has no real long-term goals other than supporting himself and living the best life he can; making somewhat of a standout at his workplace, where most of the staff seems to have some kind of eccentric or unnatural behavioral qualities.
Sexuality
Charlie is bisexual, as seen by how he is dating a human woman, but also expressed romantic interest in Mip, a male, hobbit-like creature.
Reaction
Fan reactions to Charlie's bisexuality has been mostly positive. Since the scene where he flirts with Mip plays off their attraction as a punchline, most viewers found the scene funny and did not read any further into it.
Relationships
Unnamed Girlfriend
Charlie is seen being accompanied by an unnamed human woman in multiple scenes who has been confirmed to be his girlfriend. She has no dialogue, and Charlie never communicates with her on screen, however we do see that he invited her to the office Halloween Party.
Mip
Mip was a small, humanoid male creature reminiscent of the Rankin/Bass depiction of Bilbo Baggins. Charlie met him during a job in which he and pim were hired to make a princess living in a magical forest smile. During the job charlie and Pim were captured by a witch, but rescued by Mip, who explained that he was searching for a hero worthy of delivering a present to the same Princess they were hired by. Mip would lead Charlie and Pim through the forest over the course of a couple days, during which time Charlie and Mip grew very close as Mip led him on secondary quests where he would be showered with praise and treasure for completing a variety of tasks. One night, when they were close to reaching their goal, Mip and Charlie would get into a conversation where they would express thier mutual appreciation of each other, and begin to flirt. Later that night, Pim, jealous of Charlie for his glory during the side quests, would attempt to steal Mip's box so he could complete at least one side-quest too. Charlie began to fight with him over the box, and it flew out of his hands, hitting Mip in the face and causing him to stumble backwards onto a spear. With his dying breaths Mip forgave Pim for his mistake, and told Chrlie that he now realized he was driving a wedge between Charlie and Pim, and that their friendship should survive.
The next day, as Charlie and Pim delivered the gift Mip had made, the princess explained that Mip had been stalking her for months, and was nervous to open the box. Quickly, she discovered the box contained a bomb, and tossed it out a window just in time for it to detonate without harming anyone.Due to this sour discovery about Mip's intentions, Charlie likely reassesd his memories with him, and probably does not regret having never gotten into a more serious relationship with him.
Mustard
Mustard is a female, sentient packet of mustard roughly the size of a person who served as a mascot for the "Salty's" Resturaunt chain before its owner, Simon S. Salty was murdered. The same day of his death, Charlie and Pim were informed that, due to police Budget cuts, the town had somehow ruled that the Smiling Friends were now responsible for solving murder mysteries. Interrogating each employee at the store to try an deduce the culprit, Charlie inevitably found himself alone with Mustard, asking her about the case. Mustard admitted that she had just broken off an affair with Simon the day he was murdered, but insisting that she would have never hurt him. Trying to gain leverage over Charlie, Mustard began to try and seduce him, asking him if he liked "fun". Charlie, innocently unaware of what she was really asking about, simply said yes, and became frustrated when she asked him again, thinking that she was just being redundant. Charlie seemed flustered as he exited the room, seemingly only realizing what she was implying after she had already tried and failed to get the better of him.
Tropes
But not too Bi - While Charlie is capable of attraction to both sexes he has only ever been shown entering a serious relationship with a woman.
Ambiguously Bi - Charlie's attraction to Mip ends at him giving him a single interested look during a long pause. He never verbally expresses an attraction to men, or does anything else to confirm he isn't straight.
