Description A script to automatically bypass the Prints page is bundled into deviantTIDY . Enjoy!

`dancewiththesky also made a Greasemonkey script to do the same thing.

Dear deviantART,

Please stop ramming prints down users' throats.

The majority of deviations created by deviants are simply never going to be made into prints. This is because the resolution is too low, the dimensions are wrong, the piece is not good enough to be considered a print, or in many cases, the deviation is just not supposed to be a print.

We'd like to see deviantART revert back to the previous submission system, where there are two buttons: one for prints and one for non-prints. This way, the user has a choice and feels in control, and people that aren't interested in prints will not be faced with a screen similar to the above.

Here are some more good reasons:

- The vast majority of users simply don't want to make prints. Therefore, the system is wasting the average user's time. The user is not expecting this page. It is bad design.
- deviantART is free, and any commercial options should be opt-in, not opt-out. If people want prints, they will select the option.
- People who are submitting work and not wanting to make prints will most likely face the above screen with a giant red error. Without further reading this page, it is obviously understandable that the user will be confused and wonder if their deviation was submitted successfully. Even I, when I first saw this screen, thought something went wrong and then proceeded to go back and try to re-submit my work.
- Most deviations, including fan-art and work that is the wrong category or sub-standard, cannot be made into prints, according to the Prints agreement. Encouraging everyone to make everything into prints will actually increase the number of policy violations on dA, and also increase the workload of the Prints staff.

deviantART is, on the whole, a good system and a great community, and I am not one to make frequent complaints, but this particular stunt has captured the hatred of thousands of users. I hope this matter can be resolved to keep everyone happy.

While you're reading, I'd also like to point out the fact that over 80% of deviants want preview images back.

Regards,

`BoffinbraiN .

Yes, the only people who won't be annoyed are the full-time print makers on dA, and that's a very low percentage of deviants.

I have been annoyed too. Especially when submitting emotes. There is only one emote in whole dA, which is available as print.

And there's a good reason for that, of course. Emoticons are for the screen - not for the wall.

Whoa, (sorry I know this is waaay off topic) when I hover over the comment before you favourite link, it shows the deviation!

It never did that before...

BoffinBrain In reply to popcorn-pops [2007-03-02 17:19:36 +0000 UTC]

Someone else saw that too. What happens is, when you hover over a deviation link in your subscriber's message centre, it shows the thumb. It doesn't care that the link is in my signature. Pretty cool, nonetheless.

Maybe devART just wanted to make the things a bit faster, so people that actually do prints can have an easy life.

It sucks though. Not all of us make prints. Great concept mate.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

BoffinBrain In reply to mauricioestrella [2007-03-02 04:38:56 +0000 UTC]

Yes, but the previous system was perfect for everyone. People that wanted prints would click one button and move on, and those who didn't want prints would click the other button and finish. Now, more people will be inconvenienced because most people on dA don't want to make prints, and they now have to suffer an extra complicated step.

Thanks for supporting the concept, albeit imaginary.

Again, I agree with you and think you have a brilliant mind. If people want to make prints of their deviations, then they would select that option. We don't need to be reminded that we can do that. Being an emoticon artist as well as many other things, it annoys me when I upload an emoticon and it asks me if I want to make a print

But yeah, great idea, hope someone important sees this
Now I'm going back to staring at my cursor.
Toodles!

Yes, the fork emoticon works well when talking about user frustrations. And indeed - people will select prints if they want them. It's called opt-in.

Enjoy.

I don't hate the print-screen but just tha fact that it opens even if the the deviation is not the correct size, that's just ridiculous....

deviantART is not clever in this respect. They're assuming that all art we submit can be made into a print.

Yes, the previous system was better for everyone. For those that wanted to make a print, you just need one click. For those that don't, it was one click. Now, users that don't want to make prints (most of us) have to go through an extra stage which is useless and frustrating. When I first saw this screen, my attention was drawn to the red error box, and I immediately assumed there was a problem with the deviation I had submitted, not knowing that the submission was actually successful.
