About DeviantTidy
DeviantTidy is a set of styles and scripts to improve the layout and usability of deviantART.
Ever since dAv5, many users have been unhappy with various aspects of dA's layout and design. Some decisions on font size, margins and spacing had clearly been neglected.
And so DeviantTidy was written, to claim back much of that wasted space! Inspired by some of janvanlysebettens 's CSS mods for Firefox, DeviantTidy was a very lightweight modification to fix comment boxes and various other assets on dA pages, to make things clearer and more streamlined. Since then, it's expanded to cover lots of other annoyances, big and small, to improve the look and usability of the site, and with a JavaScript interface, it's fully customizable too.
Features
- More efficient Comment Boxes: DeviantTidy reduces the minimum height and margins on comment boxes, and further reduces the size of signatures, so you can see more comments at once. You can also add scrollbars to really long comments.
- Hide and collapse elements: Hide social sharing buttons, 'More Like This' mini-galleries and other bloat from deviantART pages so you can focus on your task.
- Indent guides: A problem that has been around as long as nested comments is the difficulty you face in working out who replied to who in long and complex discussions. With DeviantTidy, just point at a comment to see guide-lines in the left margin, showing you the exact nest level the comment is on.
- Cleaner Forum threads: Thread listings are now easier to browse, with all unnecessary icons removed, and shorter table rows (one line high instead of two, doubling the number of threads you can see per screen).
- Floating comment box: If you want to be able to type your comment on a deviation or journal while looking at the original, without having to constantly scroll up and down the page, this feature allows you to make the reply box float above the page content, following you wherever you scroll. Press ALT+SHIFT+C to activate it.
- Hide thumbnails in deviation sidebar: Reduce distractions by hiding 'more from this artist' and 'more like this' mini thumbnails when viewing art.
- Hide the orange Upgrade to CORE ad in the page header (turned off by default).
- ...and many more!
Installation
In order to use Greasemonkey scripts, you need to install Greasemonkey for Mozilla Firefox, or Tampermonkey for Google Chrome.
FAQ
How can I check that DeviantTidy is working?
When you first install DeviantTidy (or the script component), a dialog will appear when you visit any DA page to let you know that it was successfully installed. You should also see a 'DeviantTidy Options' link under the user menu on the header navigation when you are logged in.
Can I use DeviantTidy with [insert your favourite skin or script here]?
DeviantTidy can be used safely in combination with other custom deviant skins and scripts because it does the very minimum amount of changes required to get the desired effect. In the rare event of clashes in styles or broken functionality, tell me about the issue, and include info about the other mods you are using.

Hmm... It's quite difficult to diagnose on someone else's machine, and I don't hear everyone having the problem. So what version of Greasemonkey and Firefox are you using? Do you not see a link in the footer on any v6 page?

I'm using Firefox 2.0.0.16 and as far as I can tell the latest version of Greasemonkey (I just checked for updates and couldn't find any)

Yeah, I found someone else using FF2 and having the same issue. I was using getElementsByClassName which is FF3-only. Download the script again for the backwards-compatible version.

Now you have to make it for IEx7. There are a lot of users used to IEx7 who don't want to go to FireFox somply because they're used to IE. They know FF is better, know all about it, but don't want to go through the process of learning the new browser.

Personally, I don't understand why people would use an inferior product in the full knowledge that the alternative is fully customizable and also free. I don't think 'being used to it' is a valid argument; one must make an effort sometimes in order to adapt to change.
Regardless of the whole favourite browser argument, I'm afraid there is absolutely no chance that any developer is going to be making XPI extension support for IE any time soon. Sorry...

I guess I passed the top of the description up while looking for the change log... I remember (a long time ago, now) you had a file uploaded to dA for a short while, but we had to change the extension after downloading. I also remember when you switched to doing it this way. I wish I would have remembered all of that BEFORE posting that comment. Oh well. Out of curiosity, is there any reason you don't post this on [link] ? I hear they take a while to post submitted updates to some extensions, but I would think that would be a good place to at least mirror the file.
Do you have any plans of adding an option to toggle the icon-only-style navigation? I know how to edit the Javascript and CSS, being a web developer myself, so I could do it manually, but I like the convenience of extensions that update themselves. I use a widescreen monitor (two, actually) and use only 5 icons in that section, so I would much rather have the text back. I saw you had a poll about this, but maybe offering it as an option would be much more useful, if possible.

BoffinBrain In reply to rthaut [2008-09-05 22:31:35 +0000 UTC]
My reasons for not posting the extension on Mozilla's addons site are: it's very site-specific, so it isn't really worth the time and effort to get it up there, and also I've learned how to write my own secure updates by signing the extensions, so you can guarantee they're secure even over regular HTTP (as well as, of course, me being able to update it instantly).
Regarding the icons-only option, it's not really appropriate to make an option for every single thing, as that's a lot of JavaScript time which will slow things down. I don't yet hear others wanting this to be optional, and in fact there are several styles and scripts by others which also support icons-only style, so if it troubles you that much, I think going custom-made is your best option. If you watch me, you'll know when you need to update.

I just figured the Mozilla Addons site would be useful for reaching a broader audience, but then too I guess most dA users can find this one without trouble here. I don't think many people are worried about signed extensions (other than the folks at Mozilla Labs).
As for the option for icons-only, at the time I voted in your poll it was around 40%-against, 60%-for. I haven't checked in awhile, but I thought that, if it was still somewhat close, an option would be appreciated. I have never made extensions before, but wouldn't adding the options in the Extension's options panel of Firefox (Tools->Addons->deviantTIDY->Options button, which is currently disabled) remove any performance losses from the javascript? I assume you haven't done it that way due to the (presumed) amount of work it takes to configure the addon's options panel, or perhaps you like the idea of configuring the script in a way that seems more related to dA rather than Firefox. And I understand your argument about adding more options; I know from experience that just leads to people wanting more and more options.
You have done great work for dA, including some of your mock-ups, which is why I have been watching you for a long time now. I just wanted to offer some of my ideas, but I hope nothing I have said has come across the wrong way.

I've definitely considered having Firefox native options and I have the knowledge to do so, but the problem with that is, as soon as I do so, the package can no longer be separated into a CSS and Greasemonkey script. But yes, everything you've said makes perfect sense. Thanks for the support! We'll see soon enough what I need to do in order to satisfy the majority of users...

The comment indentations, page rearrangements, etc. are all part of the CSS. I'm talking about the Greasemonkey script. If it's not updating then remove it and re-install.

Are you sure? If you're using Firefox, you'll probably need to accept a security warning at the top. Otherwise, right-click and choose to Save the link, then drag the downloaded file into a Firefox window to install.

Right-click the link, and you should be able to save the file devianttidy.xpi. Otherwise, yes, you could try another browser but that shouldn't be necessary.

Oh, how I miss deviantTIDY! Can't wait for the v6 update. Am I allowed to give suggestions?
Getting rid of ads, first of all. I don't know if that was part of it before, but it would be nice.
Lose stylish. I have to turn off stylish to view my message centre, and that means no TIDY. or code TIDY in a way that takes the message centre back to normal, despite the stylish error.
Keep the indent guides and expanded message count, for sure. The nicer comments are great, too... let's see... that's all I can think of. The rest is either stuff I can't remember, or stuff I didn't notice. Anyway, I loved TIDY in v5, and I know you won't disappoint in v6.

BoffinBrain In reply to toph-bIind-love [2008-07-31 10:02:33 +0000 UTC]
TIDY never hid adverts, and I don't think it would be looked upon kindly if I did. For those that really don't like the ads, they can use AdBlock Plus and find Stylish styles elsewhere, as they've already been made by others.
Also, there's issues with Stylish and deviantART as far as I'm aware. Have you tried disabling individual styles to see what might be causing the trouble?
And yeah, other suggestions are always welcome!

toph-bIind-love In reply to BoffinBrain [2008-07-31 22:43:15 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I guess it may be frowned upon, huh? But I was using adblock too.
I thought it could be some of the individual styles, but there were still problems after disabling all of them. I switched stylish on and off... oh well.
I can live without. Anyway, I could always get greasemonkey, deviantTIDY works with that, right?
