Here's the great debate I'm having with myself (and a friend).
A friend of mine here on DA and on discord (I won't mention his name, this isn't calling him out, it's just meant to start discussion and gather opinions) recently told me he thought it was a bad idea for me to do pieces like this. Let me explain: Lasticlover approached me and asked if I would draw his characters along with Vicky Velocity in a single image as a favor. So I drew up this image.

Now, the debate comes in where my friend says that this kind of thing (drawing images for others without monetary compensation) is not a wise thing to do.

To clarify: we agree that in making a collaboration whereas both parties draw part of an image or a comic story that neither party needs to bother with the issue of money at all. In that case, both parties are equal partners in the creation of the finished product. I think you take my meaning there.

But to do a piece like this, whereas someone approaches me to do a 'favor' to draw fanart of their character just because....is this fair? I'm not coming down on Lasticlover at all here, so don't think I'm trying to lay a guilt trip on you, or anyone else. I just want the opinions of others as to whether or not I should start charging for things like this.

What do you think? Should I, going forward, ask for compensation when doing something like this? I did commissions last year during the quarantine and was kept pretty busy doing commissions. I'm not currently open to commissions officially. But if this happens again (someone approaching me for fanart or any other kind of art situation) should I charge them? Should I make up a new commissions pricing sheet? Also, just for reference, according to my price sheet from last year, this image doesn't really fit into any of the categories I have listed, but it would probably cost about $35, which I would consider cheap. If I created a new price guide, I'd up my prices. Should I just forget about it?
