Her assessment was moons in the making. By no means did anyone tell her to go to such lengths for her assessment- she was not forced to hunt down every reasonably huntable specie on their territory and yet, Warblerpaw had made it her responsibility to. In the beginning, it was merely to show off to her mother, Pumpkinstem. Warblerpaw desperately wanted her mothers affection and attention. Her praise in words. Anything. And yet for her entire apprenticeship...after lizards and fish, bees and more...nothing. Warblerpaw however kept a one-track mind- perhaps in turn this work would have Eaglepaw, her crush and kit-hood friend singing her praises and yet that too, ended in failure. At a point it became a personal goal. A means to justify all of her wasted time and effort.
She kept the prey she was most scared of for last.
A snowshoe hare was not as easy as cats may make it out to be. Sneaking up on one ended up most times in failure due to their precise hearing and catching up to one after it bolted was nearly impossible. Eventually, she managed to sneak up onto one and caught up to it before it could gain momentum- but why did no cat tell her actually killing a hare would be difficult? It's strong legs thumped against her chest and arms even as she held it down. Her own blood was drawn the same time it's life had ended. Warblerpaw's body was so sore days after that she truly wondered if that food was worth the pain. After all that effort too, and no one to share it with...the kit-hood story her mother told her became a bitter memory.
The last on her list- a cormorant. It was no small bird but she had been studying them for a few days now and she was confident on when to pounce on one when they were most distracted. The smallest of the bunch- if she could get her fangs on their small throats it would be easy- she could finish her seemingly never-ending hunt list. The dirty pebbles were hot on her paws as she dashed forwards towards the river and the gathered cormorants, as if the heat fueled her speed she gained momentum and with a solid leap, she successfully snagged her target.
The sides flipped all too suddenly.
The despair was instant, the fear for her life was so immense she couldn't call out for Heronchaser who was nearby, watching the situation go south entirely. Warblerpaw was in the air for what felt like a few moments even though it was only a couple of seconds. The cormorant could not carry her and it's own weight and begun plummeting back down to the earth. Warblerpaw was just lucky that it didn't fly far- but it didn't feel like it. Her body hit the ground with a loud thud that stunned her. Shocks of pain rippled through her back and shoulders to the very tips of her claws. She had to let go of the birds neck to gasp for breath.
But the bird had no mercy- it took two chunks out of her stomach as she tried to recover herself. Warblerpaw's face let out tears of anguish and for the first time in many moons she wanted to call out to her mother for help- to come save her from this nightmare. But she couldn't.
Warblerpaw managed to grab back onto the cormorants neck as it went in for a third bite and didn't let go- she bit down hard enough to hear the bones in it's neck shatter as she used it as a brace for her own, excruciating pain. The bird slowly stopped moving, and within seemingly milliseconds, Heronchaser was there checking on her to see if she was okay.
Warblerpaw spat out the birds neck and tiny feathers stuck on her tounge as she caught herself- grounded herself back onto the plane of the living. She wasn't a kit any longer- she'd never get the chance to call out for her mother or father- she was grown up now.
When she went back to camp after her wounds stopped bleeding she checked in with the herbalist's but asked that they kept this...between them. She wasn't dead after all and really- she didn't want any attention drawn to her. Not anymore.
