Description
The African Rock Python (Python sebae) is a large, non-venomous snake of sub-Saharan Africa. They live in grasslands and savannahs near water and occasionally in forest edges and prefers to make its home in the Rocky outcroppings where it can hide. They’re nocturnal and enjoy climbing trees and branches at night, where they can ambush prey. There are two subspecies of African Rock Python: The Central African Rock Python (P. s. sebae) and the South African Rock Python (P. s. natalensis). Africa's largest snake and one of the six largest snake species in the world (along with the green anaconda, reticulated python, Burmese python, Indian python, and amethystine python). African Rock Pythons, while intelligent creatures, have quite a reputation for being aggressive.Social: African rock pythons are fairly solitary snakes, seeking out their own kind only during the breeding season.
Size: 9 to 11 feet in length for males and 15 feet in length for females. Even larger specimens measured at 25 feet. Weights are reportedly in the range of 97 to 121 lbs. Exceptionally large specimens may weigh 201 lbs. or more.
