So the past couple weeks we've been focusing on animation timing. We've been asked to do simple animation exercises (a ball bounce, a pendulum, a run cycle), all done to Don's specific timing instructions. It's been sort of a moc-studio scenario where we pretend it is a director asking us. Once the simple task is complete (in this case a simple ball bounce animation) we have then been asked to use the same timing techniques to animate a (assigned) familiar character over the image. The ball bounce turned into a head bounce of our beloved cheshire cat. It's a fantastic exercise. In this way, we've really been learning to PLAN our animations, and learning the language of 'animation timing charts' and how to use Exposure sheets (X-Sheets), all techniques essential back in the days of traditional pencil-test animation. They're still used widely now.
