Description This one took a bit. I was recording a timelapse but my computer crashed at the end. Since I save every few moments I only lost about a minute of work in photoshop but so far all the video is gone. Screw you computer.

I didn't know a sketch could look that good, its rly detailed

This image has everything.
Nature, Mountains, River, Trees, a dramatic perspective and the stairs which is something artificial but rly fits good into the picture.
The shadows at the waterfall are on point, there are no clouds which drag the attention away from the scene, its a nice clear sky.
The rocks really look "random" which makes them look really realistic (well for a sketch).
Really beautiful picture. Only thing i would have added would have been some herbs and a few flowers

It started as a sketch, and then I was having fun and added a lot more to it.
When I was doing the daily sketches the goal was just to make a sketch but not necessarily to stop there. I should start again because its a shame I stopped.

Thanks for the comment

Hello!
I like your picture, beautiful landscape. In particular, in your work, I like these beautiful cliffs look very impressive.Β
Beautiful work, I really like!

I'm posting with Project Comment .

I love this picture so much! My favorite scenery is the kind which makes you want to step into it and explore. The scene you've chosen does that for me, with this old rock hewn, possibly abandoned, staircase. It makes me wonder what the story behind it is.

I'm a big fan of the sketchy line work. It creates a feeling of aliveness, even when the scene you are drawing is mostly still objects. Great job with the stream. The way you've used a lot of transparency captures what actual running water looks like.Β  I agree with the other commenter that the water could be less saturated, but I think a slightly stylized representation also works well with the rest of the image.

One point for improvement is that the trees in the foreground blend into the trees on the ledge behind them. If the highlight that you already have on the foreground trees extended to the top, it would help differentiate them a little bit.

Thank you so much for the constructive comment! I completely agree with you on the trees, they blend too much.

About the stairs though: thats what made me want to draw the picture in the first place! The first thing I thought when I saw the stairs was "what do they go to" and it made me interested enough to take a second look and eventually use it as a reference.

Jesus, this is my new reference image for forest backgrounds. The trees are amazingly believable for ones with so little sketching detail, as is the craggy cliff and everything in between. The shading is also very realistic, with the individual strokes almost taunting in their simultaneous invisibility and obviousness once seen.

The only negatives that are coming to mind right now are that the sky looks oddly simple - I'd think some simple clouds could improve it greatly with little effort - and the stairs look strangely big compared to the trees. All the same, this is amazing work compared to the relatively sparse sketches I see elsewhere in the preview of your gallery. Keep up the sketching!

I think the reason the stairs look too big is because I lost some of the perspective inbetween the grassy gnoll where the stairs are and the areas with trees. They each look in perspective individually but not together. There is almost too much distance to the "near" trees and not enough distance to the "far" trees.

Thanks so much for the constructive comment! I really agree with you about the sky in retrospect.
p.s. I am flattered that you consider it good enough to be a reference image, thanksΒ Β

The use of colors are really good, I particularly like the shades of green and how you didn't make them super saturated, but made them a little toned down. The stones are well drawn and the sketchy lineart sort of works. ON the other hand it gives it sort of an unfinished work, an you might think about doing something line less with this. One thing thatI might have a complaint about is how saturated the blue in the water is, it's almost turqouise and doesn't look quite as realistic as the rest of the picture.

I do think that the sky has a nice gradient, and I really like the lineart of the grass and the shading from the trees in it.Β

Thank you for the constructive comment! I am really enjoying all the feedback. Originally I actually planned to make it a dry riverbed but partway through I abandoned that because I didnt like the look. I then struggled to properly convey that it was water when it was white. Essentially I was lazy, and went from not drawing any water to saying "screw it, ill just make it blue and people will get what it is". I definitely do need to do a water study though, its a weak spot for me xD

Well water is really difficult to render, I think another part is that it isn't see through. But I understand how it would be hard to convey white frothy water

hey, i'm from ProjectComment c:Β

wow, this is a great-looking picture! the first thing that struck me about it was the composition, which you even changed a bit from the reference photo to make it look more interesting, so good job for doing that c: i also like how you changed the rocks and waterfall from the reference picture, because they look really cool here the sketchier style you used to outline this looks very dynamic and vibrant, i really like it! the varied line weight looks really good as well c: you seem to have a good gasp of shading and textures, which are really well done here.Β
however, if you wanted to improve on this a bit, i would suggest changing the colour of the waterfall and river to white, because it is very rare for waterfalls in nature to look blue. if you look at your reference photo, you can see what i mean. i would also suggest changing the colour of the sky to a slightly warmer blue (closer to purple on the colour wheel than green), because it is very rare for skies to naturally appear this cool.Β
If you look at your reference photo, you can see that, since tree branches radiate outward from the tree trunk, the strongest value difference is between the outermost branches and the rest of the pine tree, meaning that the shadows should travel horizontally across the trees rather than vertically. (if that even makes sense haha i'm not entirely sure how to say it)Β
Those are just nitpicky little things though, and other than that this is a very well-drawn and beautiful picture, you should be proud of yourself keep up the good work!Β

Thanks for the constructive feedback! Thanks to people on Deviantart and friends along with just grinding through it I am getting better at doing landscapes. I am really only good at rocks so far though haha. I do need to work on my water/ice/steam/fog (any form of any liquid really!) though.
I appreciate the comment
