"Are you tired of shelling out large sums of credits for a protocol droid only for the droid to get damaged in the harsh work environment? Then perhaps its time to depend on a time tested and proven model capable of withstanding some of the toughest environments in the galaxy! Re-introducing the GE3 Series Protocol Droid, now available for order or direct purchase from your nearest licensed Cybot Galactica Droid Dealer!" - Cybot Galactica advertisment for GE3 Series Protocol Droid circa 21 ABY.
In the decades prior to the Mandalorian Wars almost 4000 years prior to the Battle of Yavin, Czerka Corporation (then much larger and more expansive than its present incarnation, Czerka Arms) developed one of the first commercially available Protocol Droids, the GE3 series Protocol Droids. These droids sold like wildfire as they were highly customizable for nearly any purpose. The stock GE3s were equipped with vocabulators capable of storing up 5000 forms of communication and made highly suitable droids for diplomats and tradesmen. Most of these droids were programmed to speak in basic but some of the earlier models would speak almost exclusively in droidspeak. The GE3 was one of the products that helped propel Czerka Corporation into its golden age during the Jedi Civil War era. However Czerka had a somewhat disreputable reputation for the era and was known for having dealings in slavery and having a habit of siding openly with the Sith Empire or Sith Aligned factions throughout galactic history. Eventually though the GE3 was discontinued after the introduction of the GE4 model. By 2763 Czerka had shuttered and sold off their droid development division due to poor sales (owed partly due to poor droid designs and getting beaten in the droid market by Cybot Galactica and Industrial Automaton). Cybot Galactica acquired the schematics and rights to all of Czerka's droid designs after Czerka sold off their droid division to pay off the company's mounting debts. It's said that this sale actually helped keep Czerka afloat long enough to get back on its feet. By the time of the Rebellion, Czerka had been reorganized as Czerka Arms, primarily dealing in weaponry.
After being discontinued, the GE3s began to dwindle in number across the galaxy. By the time of the Galactic Empire, only a handful remained, all in museums or private collections, much like the T3 series utility droids that were often seen working beside the GE3s. The operational status of these antique units varies, with most inoperable and others being only partially functional.
However in 20 ABY, Cybot Galactica's market analysts noticed a need for low cost protocol droids for the more rugged parts of the galaxy such as moisture farms, various mines, and places where a durable protocol droid model would prove useful. Cybot Galactica dug into their databases and found the old GE3 designs and recognized that these droids were perfect for such a role if modernized and modified correctly. The new GE3s are equipped with more streamlined internal circuitry, a more durable frame, tougher exterior casing, and all the etiquette and protocol functions of modern protocol droids, boasting 6 Million different forms of communication. Compared to the 3PO model protocol droids, the GE3s are meant for operating in harsher environments such as in mines, on farms, and are capable of doing work notably tougher for the average protocol droid. The only drawback is that the newer GE3s, with their streamlined circuitry, are much harder to modify and customize for differing roles, almost making them niche specialists. Their programming remains easy to modify, but customizations of their hardware is much harder. Even recognized and celebrated droid architects such as Nek Bakar have commented on the difficulty in modifying these droids.
As of 28 ABY, the GE3 has proven to be a moderate success for Cybot Galactica, seeing many GE3s being acquired by farmers, miners, and others. Their low price tag makes them relatively easy to acquire but most customers still prefer the more sophisticated 3PO models or even BD series luxury droids to fill the protocol droid roles. The New Republic Military possesses a number of GE3s for service aboard their starships. Interestingly, Czerka Arms has a number of these droids working for them, all painted up with a vintage paint scheme for Czerka GE3 units circa the Jedi Civil War (Czerka Legacy Colors seen above).
One GE3 unit was briefly referenced in the holocron of Jedi Master Revan, as part of the Jedi Exile, Meetra Surik's experiences during the Dark Wars shortly after the Jedi Civil War. The droid in question was designated as B-4D4-GE3, and was the assistant to the Citadel Station Czerka Administrator there at the time until he was effectively stolen by Surik and used to help incriminate Czerka's underhanded operations on Telos. Afterwards B-4D4-GE3 fled to Nar Shaddaa along with a disputatious and violent T1 series Utility Droid that essentially kept B-4D4-GE3 prisoner. His whereabouts afterwards are unknown and believed lost to time.
