"Man, that disfigured artiodac might not be pretty to look at, but I know freighter pilots that, if leaving to finish a job meant missing Tuggs and his food freighter, they'd knock out their own hyperdrive for one of his dishes." - Unknown freighter pilot regarding Strono Tuggs and his Utilipede Transport.
The Utilipede Transports were designed in a joint venture between Sienar Fleet Systems and Haor Chall Engineering as a modern sibling to the older Sheathipede and Maxillipede shuttles of the Clone Wars. The Utilipede was designed as a more civilian friendly cargo transport, relying on removable modular cargo slots on the ship's underside to haul cargo through hyperspace. Utilipedes come with six small cargo pods as standard but larger cargo pods are available, identified by the number of "grappling points" located on the top of the pods where they connect to the transport's cargo locks. Small pods require only have one set of grappling points, medium have four, and large have six and take up the entire cargo space. These pods have actually been available for older transports for several years, if not decades, making them cheap and easy to acquire. Sienar and Haor Chall have offered a new passenger pod for the transports, allowing the Utilipede to transport a handful of passengers. However the passenger pods haven't been as popular as its just as easy, if not slightly cheaper, to reconfigure a medium or large cargo pod into a passenger pod and custom pods are increasingly more-and-more common. Sienar and Haor Chall have even gone so far as to offer easy conversion kits in recent years to make custom pods easier to make.
Utilipedes have proven to be easy to maintain and operate even by novice mechanics which has made the Utilipede a semi-popular transport vessel. They still don't have the same level of popularity as more mainstream freighters and transports as their range and cargo capacity is not as great as other ships. Utilipedes have a shorter range than most freighters too which further keeps it down. However for freelance freighter pilots who like to jump from system to system looking for short-range transport work, this works perfectly. Traveling merchants have also found Utilipedes perfect as easy to fly and maintain transports so they can hawk their wares.
Perhaps the most unique example of this is the Artiodac chef Strono Tuggs, who acquired a brand new Utilipede in a bet, and proceeded to modify it accordingly so as to turn it into a food freighter, converting three of its cargo-pods into storage for an array of foodstuffs and ingredients while the other three are a functional kitchen, allowing him to prepare and serve meals across the galaxy. Having earned a reputation for his cooking in Kanata Palace on Takodana, Tuggs' has garnered an almost cult-like following of food enthusiasts, with several holonet message boards dedicated to tracking his movements. His last known location was at Black Spire Outpost on Batuu where he has rented out a whole docking bay and converted it into a makeshift eatery.
