Description The following information relates only to my variation of the Batman Universe and does not tie into any existing Batman universes.

The model used in the image came from Batman: Arkham City

...

Name: Edward "Eddie" Nigma, Edward "Eddie" Nashton (birth name)
Alias: The Riddler, Enigma (former alias)
Justice League Threat Level: 8
Known Affiliations: Competitron (former programmer - terminated)
Known Associates: No immediate associates, employs numerous informants.
Known abilities: Genius Level Intelligence, Expert Detective, Independently Wealthy (finances legally and illegally acquired, numerous accounts), Escapologist.
Notes: Malignant Narcissist, compulsive need to prove intellectual superiority over others, easily beaten in hand-to-hand combat.

Born Edward Nashton, the man that would become the Riddler grew up in an unhappy home. His father valued physical strength and toughness to intellectual prowess and grew frustrated at Edward's preference for riddles and puzzles. He also suffered abuse at the hands of his classmates. He got revenge on all of them though in a highly complicated scheme. He wrote an early form of ransomware and infected his High School's computer network with the virus under the alias of Enigma. Instead of demanding payment, the virus would only release its control of the system after a series of riddles and puzzles were solved. For every wrong answer, it would release several compiled blackmail pieces assembled on specific faculty and students. If all the materials were leaked due to wrong answers, the system would simply be purged, leaving only the blackmail data. Subsequently, Eddie's "Riddleware" led to the termination and even incarceration of over 8/9ths of the school's faculty and the suspension of over 3/4ths of the student body. No one was able to defeat his Riddleware and no one knew it was his creation. Either way, Eddie relished the chaos he had unleashed upon his tormentors.

Later, Edward's love of riddles led him to legally change his name to Edward Nigma, forever leaving behind his life as Edward Nashton. He got a job working at Competitron, a computer science firm that worked to develop high-functioning AIs. During this time, out of boredom, Edward wrote a computer game known as Riddle of the Minotaur, a game of puzzles and riddles to challenge its players. Seeking to become rich off of the game, Edward brought it to his employer, Daniel Mockridge, who agreed to publish the game. Not long afterwards, Edward was furious to discover that his involvement with the game had been effectively whitewashed and Mockridge had claimed the credit for creating the game whilst subtly firing Edward. Eddie swore vengeance and a month later, shortly after the game's release, Eddie abducted Mockridge and placed him into a life-sized version of Riddle of the Minotaur only Eddie was now going under the alias of...

The Riddler.

This led to the Riddler's first encounter with the Batman who managed to solve the Riddler's puzzles and rescue Mockridge before apprehending Riddler himself. Regardless Mockridge was outed as having stolen the game from Nigma and was ruined, earning the Riddler a pyrrhic victory. The Riddler, now seeing a possible intellectual equal in Batman, singled him out as the perfect foe. Later Riddler orchestrated a mass bombing threat across Gotham. He challenged the Batman to solve the riddles associated with each of the bombs planted within Gotham within 24 hours. All the while, the Riddler was in the location of the original bomb, the Gotham Hall of Records, downloading the entire database, a process which would take Nigma a little under twenty-four hours to complete. Batman, however, realized the bombs were a diversion (most of them were simply full of green gelatin) and caught Nigma at the Hall of Records, apprehending him. Nigma wasn't willing to accept that the Batman had outsmarted him and swore that Batman had cheated and swore he would defeat the Batman. Riddler has been forced to maintain a certain distance from the Joker though as the Joker has made good on his previous threats that he would kill anyone who tried to expose the Batman's identity, and the Riddler intends to do just that.

The Riddler has become a reoccurring thorn in the Batman's side, developing grandiose schemes that puts innocent lives on the line to draw out the Batman before subjecting him to a series of deadly puzzles and riddles. He usually marks the beginning of his schemes with a trademark glowing green Question Mark he calls "Riddler Trophies" which usually contains or marks riddles or vital pieces of the puzzle for Batman to follow. Physically Nigma is easily beaten, completely unable to match Batman's physical prowess but that is one of the few shortcomings of his he actually acknowledges. Riddler usually works alone with his schemes but does hire a number of information handlers and other individuals on a freelance basis to assist with the setup of his schemes. Sometimes these very data handlers end up as part of the bait to lure the Batman. Financially the Riddler is independently wealthy due to his having digitally robbed a few banks as well as purchasing several small businesses that have helped to provide the Riddler with a steady income. His finances are scattered across numerous untraceable accounts and Riddler always seems to be setting up new ones. Batman theorizes that for every account he manages to link to the Riddler, two more exist to take its place. Sometimes the Riddler simply embezzles the money from various businesses and corporations. Even billionaire Bruce Wayne's own finances had been hacked to involuntarily finance one of the Riddler's schemes.

Edward's technological skills make him one of the few cybercriminals in the Rogue's Gallery. Nigma has been targeted by government agencies on several occasions and was even the target for the inaugural mission of the Suicide Squad as he'd discovered how to defuse the suicide implants developed by Amanda Waller's Project CADMUS for the Suicide Squad. Nigma also seems willing to work with other members of the Rogue's Gallery when asked for assistance, sometimes working as a "consulting-genus."

Due to Eddie's various neurosis, he usually ends up in Arkham Asylum upon apprehension but has been sent to Belle Reve on several occasions.
