"Never underestimate the choice weapon of the sand people. Their rifles look like primitive slugthrowers, but I've seen people maimed and speeders taken out by well placed shots from these rifles. If you're in the deserts of Tatooine and you hear a loud crack echoing nearby, take cover and hope the sand people are just out hunting for dinner." - Luke Skywalker regarding the Tusken Cycler Rifle
While the vast majority of the known galaxy has largely adopted blasters as the primary weapon of choice, many outer rim and remote worlds as well as many a seasoned rifleman has a healthy respect for the classic slugthrower, and there is not a slugthrower of greater infamy than the 6-2Aug2-TR Hunting Rifle used by the Tusken Raiders of Tatooine. However the Cycler Rifle, as many call it, actually straddles the line between slugthrower and blaster as it charges the solid slugs with energy, giving the shots a distinct yellow color, often followed by a trail of smoke or steam. The 6-2Aug2-TR is actually a unique sub-classification of the original 6-2Aug2 developed by Czerka Arms over two centuries before the Clone Wars. The rifles had been imported in bulk to Tatooine as part of a valiant effort to wage a campaign against the Tuskens. However the campaign failed as the Tuskens ultimately fought their enemy off through their mastery of the terrain and ability to hide their true numbers while their attackers was a poorly trained private army of mercenaries. The Tuskens picked up the discarded cycler rifles and adopted them for themselves. Ever since then, the Tusken Raiders have made modifications to these rifles and come to use them as their ranged weapon of choice. According to some anthropologists, the cycler rifles have almost become as sacred to the Tuskens as their even more sacred gaffi sticks but this remains unconfirmed as the Tuskens are notoriously cagey if not openly hostile to outsiders.
The original 6-2Aug2 was originally designed as a hunting rifle and was not meant as a more mainstream combat weapon. They were designed to be used by huntsmen in the wilds of different planets such as Tatooine, Saleucami, Felucia, Onderon, and more. However, the Tusken Raiders made a common custom modification. They have generally modified the rifle with a scope and better cooling, making the rifles more effective as both hunting rifle and combat rifle. Cycler Rifles, while exceedingly effective against infantry, also are known for being able to take down lightly armored targets such as speeders. Many an unfortunate Tatooine local has had their speeder shot at and disabled by the Tusken Raiders. For many years before the Clone Wars, the Boonta Eve Podrace took racers through the Canyon Dune Turn where Tuskens regularly would camp out and take potshots at the screaming speed machines. Several podracers have lost their machines or even their lives to the Tuskens and their Cycler Rifles. The revived podracing circuit on Tatooine has since established Race-Sec, several squads of hired mercenaries tasked with clearing the race course of Tusken Raiders prior to and during each race.
During the Clone Wars, Czerka Arms, the original manufacturer of the Cycler Rifle, managed to acquire a few of the Tusken modified rifles and began selling their own upgraded variants, the 6-2Aug2-TR, hoping to secretly be able to sell these rifles to the Separatists as an effective anti-infantry sniper rifle. They also offered the rifles to the Republic but neither side really saw fit to buy them. Instead they sold some to local militaries and private militia groups to help defend their worlds from attack and invasion. The Cycler Rifles saw more prominence during the Galactic Civil War as amateur hunters would join the Rebellion, bringing their Cycler Rifles along with them although they would often switch them out for more effective weaponry. However there were still plenty of Rebel marksmen that would come to prefer the Cycler Rifle for its light armor piercing ability and the slugs used on the rifles were relatively easy to manufacture. Even in the age of the New Republic, the Cycler Rifle is considered an approved marksman rifle and some dedicated snipers will carry the Cycler over the common plasma based sniper rifles. Even the Sith Empire has begun permitting their marksmen to use these rifles although so far it seems only their special forces snipers have opted to use them.
