Super Albino Llama = 100
Ninja Llama = 500
Fancy Llama = 1,000

So we get a badge... I got that. But all you are explaining is HOW we get the Llama badge. You are not explaining WHAT the the purpose of the badge is. How does it benefit the artist? Does it, for instance improve your ranking on Deviant Art? Or do you get a free value meal when you receive 100 of these things? Or can you get a free print of your work for every 100 badges you receive. Or what? It just doesn't make any sense at all. If a Llama badge doesn't benefit me in some way, then why on earth would I care if I got one? I have received many of them, but so what?

It's community kudo's similar to Reddit karma. It's inherently meaningless and isn't 'worth' anything but at the same time it represents how appreciative the community has been towards you and let's you add to an artist you appreciate's reputation. How 'valuable' you or someone else having a lot of badges of whatever kind is, is entirely up to you.Β

From what I've heard, they're basically commendations.
Like, hey I like your stuff and/or profile, here's a llama!
I don't know why the heck they chose a llama, but hey, it's a compliment either way. Or just a fun doohickey

I love llamas.Β  They are just a nice way of saying "hey, I like your stuff!" without making a big deal out of it.Β  They are especially great if you are like me and are a little shy about saying that kind of thing.

So do you need a llama to be able to give a llama?
Does it cost points or money or anything to give a llama?
Can basic members give llamas, or just premium members?
Is there any other kind of catch to the llama system?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

NuminiousNihil In reply to AskWritingAshfur [2014-11-09 03:42:48 +0000 UTC]

It costs absolutely nothing to give a llama. Imagine them as free business cards. They cost you nothing to give, and they cost others nothing to give to you. The catch is that you can only give one to each deviant.Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

NuminiousNihil In reply to grishm-moon [2014-11-09 03:54:14 +0000 UTC]

They're a lot like business cards. In a weird sort of way, they can be used to weave connections between deviants, give people incentive to view your page, etc.

Okay, so what is the POINT of a Llama badge? Do they actually MEAN anything?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Turvanrullaaja In reply to WorldWalker128 [2014-11-01 19:05:50 +0000 UTC]

Yeah. people give them to you so you go to check their work... why cant they just ask?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

NuminiousNihil In reply to Turvanrullaaja [2014-11-11 20:27:28 +0000 UTC]

What's easier? Typing an introduction and a request, or passing out a business card? Another feature of the badge is that it catalogs exactly how much networking a person has been doing by changing the icon. Certainly none of it is necessary, but its a nice optional feature.Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Turvanrullaaja In reply to NuminiousNihil [2015-01-11 19:48:20 +0000 UTC]

I know this is like 3 months old, but anyways.
If you want someone to watch your work, maybe that's not the best moment to be lazy. The company that gives business card's might have something that the customer wants, so the customer wants to come and buy it, so it's win for both. Customer buys what he wants and company gets that persons money. Artist who checks other artists work doesn't get anything back, but gives the other artist maybe important advice. At least i would like a nice personal message to motivate me to check someones work.Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

NuminiousNihil In reply to Turvanrullaaja [2015-01-11 20:17:25 +0000 UTC]

I can't comment as to the efficiency of the system, or its prefer-ability to more direct commentary. Nothing beats a personal message. There's nothing stopping a deviant from leaving the badge and a message.Β  What i will say is this. Deviantart is an interchange between individual deviants, not a company and a customer base, though some deviants offer commissions, interactions are still normally a one on one affair that do not necessarily entail a purchase arrangement.

If I really appreciate someone's art, and I think we have similar styles or interests, I can drop a llama and I won't necessarily expect one back. It's just a nonverbal form of encouragement, that may or may not prompt the other person to look into the donor's work. It's a completely optional system. Deivantart also supports notes and comments. Any of the three are optional.
