Who decided that after two skinny blue snake things it turns into fat, orange/yellow dragon? They don't even look close to having any genetic connection. Well there is that serpent turning into a dragon stuff, but why don't that have similar color palettes at least? I always saw Dragonite as an ugly beast but you made Dragonite look cute.

Yeah, I never liked Dragonite. It never made sense to me. I thought that Dragonair was going to turn into something more like Rayquaza. And then this wierd yellow thing appears. XD

Well I was a little surprised when I found that Dragonite's pokΓ©mon card was played on top of Dragonair's pokΓ©mon card (I didn't have the actual games when I was a kid) but when I thought about it it's kind of like a tadpole turning into a newt, but with dragons, and their names fit. Apparently it's also based on a legend about a serpent becoming a dragon, a bit like how Magikarp turning into Gyarados is based on a legend about a fish jumping over a waterfall and becoming a dragon.

Yes, Dragonair would be akin to the Korean "Imugi", a lesser kind of dragon or sea serpent, it catches a magical pearl from heaven which will transform it into a true dragon, which is why Dragonair holds that blue orb beneath its chin. I am not sure why Dragonite was depicted as a western dragon and not an Asian dragon though, perhaps because Asian dragons are sacred, or perhaps simply because Gyarados being a sea serpent already resembles an Asian dragon. Either way, they are two of my favourite designs in the first generation, which is why I will spend absolutely ages in the Safari park trying to catch two dratini so I can have one of each!
